While up in NYC for the Chrome Summit, we had the unique opportunity to sit down with Parisa Tabriz, Google's Vice President and General Manager for Chrome. You might know her as the Security Princess, but Parisa got started at Google as a hacker intern and now leads the entire Chrome team, so yeah, she's kind of a big deal.
To keep things interesting, we decided to snag some donuts from the event and try out a few during the discussion. And make sure to stick around till the end for the story behind Parisa's "Security Princess" title. It's a good one!

hey what's up everyone uh Joe and paresa
0:07
T bre here with uh me at the Chrome
0:10
Summit here in New York City and Welcome
0:13
to our new show that we're doing called
0:16
Chrome Dino and donuts so excited uh um
0:19
a little bit nervous but excited to dig
0:22
the questions and the donuts this is
0:23
this is hot one style each of these are
0:25
going to get uh progressively hotter as
0:28
we go here no I'm just kidding they're
0:30
they're not sug more sugary yeah exactly
0:33
so um we do have some donuts here um
0:36
that we we we got from the stand up at
0:39
this awesome conference that's going on
0:41
here this is our first time here at this
0:43
event and we just wanted to take a
0:45
couple minutes and ask you a few
0:47
questions cool so let's Dive Right In
0:49
okay so you lead globally the team
0:52
that's responsible for the world's most
0:54
popular web browser Google Chrome what's
0:57
the coolest part of your job I have lots
0:59
of cool things uh that are part of my
1:01
job and I've been in Chrome for 10 years
1:03
um but I would say like the one constant
1:05
over that time is just all the awesome
1:07
people I get to work with and um we have
1:09
offices around the world and people that
1:12
are like brilliant engineers and
1:13
designers and um you know product leads
1:17
and marketing legal and um I just feel
1:19
like really lucky to work with all those
1:21
awesome people and then for me like I
1:23
got into coding um first via web
1:26
development like learning HTML and
1:28
JavaScript and this was was like a long
1:30
long time ago but it's also just awesome
1:32
to kind of be a part of pushing the web
1:34
as a platform forward and seeing how
1:37
that's changed kind of over the past 16
1:40
years it's our sweet 16 uh for for
1:42
Chrome this year and also like how we're
1:44
building kind of in the future and so
1:46
it's awesome to be part of that journey
1:48
I love it all right let's dive into our
1:50
first dut here um I think I'm going to
1:53
go with the sprinkle one how's that
1:54
sound for you uh are we we're both
1:56
sprinkling I think we should both
1:58
sprinkle let's go with the sprinkle okay
1:59
that's bold to go first but let's go
2:01
with you know we're going to start with
2:03
the cheers I think we should cheers okay
2:04
let's cheers cheers to Chrome cheers to
2:06
Chrome and Chrome
2:08
Donuts H not bad I think these were you
2:12
know made here in New York City I heard
2:14
oh yeah perhaps that's like some fresh
2:16
fry right there so today's event is is
2:19
all focused on Enterprise so we want to
2:22
like we want to obviously focus on that
2:23
a little bit for this conversation you
2:25
know we we we spend a lot of time going
2:27
through and seeing all of these
2:28
different applications
2:30
of of chrome and how it's uh getting
2:33
applied through Chrome OS and through
2:35
Chrome uh Enterprise premium through the
2:37
browser so for the the Chrome Enterprise
2:41
browser Market specifically how has that
2:43
evolved um over the last few years and
2:46
where do you think it's heading well uh
2:48
cuz I've you know been on sort of the
2:49
journey um with chrome first I think um
2:53
it's cool to see how the web has evolved
2:55
from like document publishing to kind of
2:57
this really capable app platform and um
3:00
one of the things that we hear and and
3:02
you know you tell me if if it resonates
3:04
too is like most people um are spending
3:06
most of their time inside of a browser
3:07
at work especially on like a desktop
3:09
form factor um it's definitely the case
3:11
at Google um but in a lot of ways the
3:14
browser has become like the new
3:15
operating system on top of the operating
3:17
system whether you're using Chrome OS um
3:20
which is like you know my my daily
3:22
laptop or you know Windows or Mac OS um
3:25
uh you're really spending majority time
3:27
in the browser so it's it's made it so
3:29
that the browser has become like the new
3:31
end point for a lot of Enterprises and
3:33
that's the place where you know your
3:35
employees are doing all of their work um
3:37
it's a place where potentially they're
3:39
seeing threats or kind of you know um
3:42
navigating risks and so for it and
3:44
security teams it's like the the kind of
3:47
best place to either address those
3:50
threats or really ensure like a highly
3:52
productive work for so we've seen the
3:54
browser become the new endo and then
3:56
definitely since the pandemic but over
3:58
the past couple of years we've also just
3:59
seen um I think the work environment get
4:02
more complex with like hybrid or remote
4:04
work um or people bringing you know
4:07
their own personal devices and typically
4:08
people trying to manage all of that to
4:10
totally so Management's gotten harder
4:12
but more and more of of someone's
4:15
workdays in the browser and I think
4:17
that's really led to where um uh there's
4:20
been a lot more focus on Enterprise
4:21
browsers and we've been investing um you
4:24
know in Enterprise for a long time but
4:26
you're even seeing kind of some some of
4:27
these Enterprise specific browsers pop
4:30
up as well and just more interest from
4:32
it and security teams especially on like
4:36
what is our browser browsers become like
4:38
Central to our it strategy so you know
4:40
how we do we compare and compete and I
4:42
think um you know our strength and sort
4:44
of like user experience and security has
4:46
made it a really good fit and um we're
4:48
popular browsers so it's like the
4:50
browser people use at home and and that
4:52
makes it easy for them to use it work
4:53
too right so today at the summit um
4:56
there were some new features announced
4:58
right so uh tell folks a little bit
5:00
about some of the new features that were
5:02
announced today at the Chrome Summit
5:03
yeah uh cool so uh we launch a bunch of
5:06
of things across browser and Os um some
5:07
of the ones that I'm excited about are
5:09
kind of a response to customer feedback
5:11
so one we know that lots of Enterprise
5:13
um well end users they want extensions
5:15
and they're using them for like
5:17
productivity or other things to kind of
5:18
customize their browser it and security
5:20
teams they want to uh like allow for
5:24
extensions and their employees to be
5:25
happy to use them but also have to
5:26
manage risk uh with extensions and so we
5:29
laun lached a couple things there one is
5:31
um a customized web store for Enterprise
5:34
organizations so they can really just
5:36
store all the recommended extensions
5:38
that they want to support in their
5:40
organization and users can just see that
5:42
web store so we also launched um
5:45
increased visibility and Telemetry for
5:47
it teams um into kind of the extensions
5:51
that um an organization uses and they
5:53
use this for reporting and just kind of
5:56
overall assessing and managing risk
5:58
right um uh we are doing a lot with AI
6:03
and I think for AI you both have like
6:06
how do you support the it teams that
6:08
have to have controls or governance um
6:11
for new AI features especially as these
6:14
things are being experimented prototyped
6:16
but also how can we use AI to um help it
6:20
teams and so we launched both um a way
6:22
to bring more flexibility to kind of
6:24
policies for it teams to manage
6:26
capabilities of AI and then also are
6:29
using um AI to um make common workflows
6:33
easier in the Google admin console so
6:36
like in one click you can set a policy
6:38
for your organization uh or you can use
6:40
natural language to search within the
6:43
admin console and so those are a couple
6:44
of the things um more advanced security
6:46
features and Integrations as well I
6:48
could go on and on but there a bunch
6:51
there's a there was a bunch but actually
6:52
like I got distracted by the donuts the
6:54
donuts are just calling my name again I
6:56
I think we'll have to dive into another
6:58
donut yeah there was there was um one
7:01
demo station upstairs that was just
7:03
showing the um um kind of like the AI
7:06
Snippets up top in the in the admin
7:08
console and you've got maybe this one it
7:11
admin who's managing all of these
7:13
devices and using AI in this way to to
7:16
find and make that person's job a little
7:18
easier right and find these problems oh
7:20
well this device is actually running a
7:21
little low on whatever and you can go in
7:23
and find those um so okay let's dive
7:25
into one more donut I don't even know I
7:28
think this going
7:30
let's go cinnamon cheers one more time
7:34
spom I'm in on the cinnamon over the
7:37
over the over the it was more subtle mhm
7:39
yeah that's um that's a much better
7:41
donut yeah it's a much better donut all
7:43
right um let's dive into some security
7:45
because i' I've heard that um I've heard
7:48
that you've got a bit of a background in
7:49
security I do and so um even though you
7:53
see you you kind of oversee all aspects
7:55
of the browser now uh security and that
7:58
you know part of the browser is still so
8:00
so so important to so many users
8:02
especially Enterprise um so like how is
8:05
security influencing Chrome and the the
8:08
direction that Chrome is going yeah so I
8:11
um worked on security for about 10 years
8:13
at at Google a little bit before then I
8:15
actually started in it too and so I
8:17
think I I think that's given me just
8:19
like a ton of empathy for actually right
8:22
the challenge of that job and um in some
8:26
ways that you know the technology has
8:28
has improve to actually mitigate risks
8:31
but also like the attackers have
8:33
advanced their techniques too and so
8:34
it's sort of like this ongoing challenge
8:36
so started in I and then you know moved
8:38
to product security came to Chrome to
8:40
lead the security team but in part I was
8:42
attracted to the product because they
8:44
really thought of security at like every
8:46
single layer in a very you know
8:50
integrated way as opposed to kind of
8:51
like okay security is a checklist at the
8:53
end so that's what attracted me to the
8:54
the product and I've been in the team
8:56
for 10 years um I think security it it
8:59
really is when done well um you need a
9:03
multi-prong strategy and it's integrated
9:05
into kind of all aspects of the product
9:06
development process and so I was close
9:10
to that but as I stepped away from
9:11
security you sort of see the the
9:13
trade-off space more with performance
9:14
and simplicity um but ultimately i
9:18
chrome is is in so many ways the way
9:20
people experience the internet and one
9:22
of the most important things we do is
9:24
keeping them safe and not making them
9:27
have to do much to actually stay safe
9:29
because uh they have other things things
9:31
to do and um I've been proud of sort of
9:34
like you know auto updates and
9:37
sandboxing and how we've pushed the web
9:39
forward with driving https over time and
9:42
the team's kind of commitment to both
9:45
doing some of the day-to-day grungy
9:48
critical hygiene work that keeps it safe
9:50
but also always in investing in
9:52
Innovation um security is still a really
9:54
core part of chrome so I don't think
9:55
it's changed so much over time but I
9:58
probably have more empathy for
10:01
performance and simplicity and that
10:03
trade-off space cuz it's really easy to
10:05
say you make something safe and fast and
10:07
simple and it's much harder to do in
10:10
practice in a way that like builds a a
10:12
product that just has a great user
10:14
experience and so um it's still very
10:16
much part of the day even though I have
10:17
people that are like smarter and and
10:20
closer to the details um but it's one of
10:23
the thing that that makes me proud and
10:24
for Enterprise it's so important we know
10:26
it's really top of mind for Enterprise
10:28
and so um um uh which is is kind of
10:31
pushes us to always um improve yeah yeah
10:35
um you mentioned maybe some of the other
10:36
core areas uh outside of security what
10:39
are some of those other core pillars of
10:41
chrome um that you all are working on
10:43
yeah so so since Chrome started we had
10:46
um uh our core principles we actually
10:48
call them the 4 s's but security we
10:50
already talked about that speed
10:52
Simplicity and stability and um speed
10:56
probably self-explanatory but like we
10:58
want the browser to be fast um again
11:00
easier said than done and uh if you're
11:02
wanting to build Chrome for kind of a
11:04
low-end phone that's different than if
11:07
you're building it for like a beefy
11:09
Chromebook or PC and so how do we really
11:13
use Resource Management to build
11:14
something that's capable and powerful
11:16
and fast that's speed um uh stability is
11:19
maybe the other one like you don't want
11:20
your brow browser to crash um I think
11:23
again easier said than done um and I
11:25
remember growing up on the web and you
11:28
open the wrong tab and your whole
11:30
machine oh yeah like browser crashes
11:32
lose the work or worse like your OS is
11:34
is hosed um so stability uh is another
11:37
core principle and then Simplicity
11:40
because um we really want people to be
11:42
able to focus on just their work and the
11:44
content not like dashboard of a million
11:47
options and but buttons and so how do we
11:49
make the user experience great so that
11:51
people can focus on their their work and
11:53
not brows or knobs yeah right and so we
11:56
think about that in all that we we do uh
11:58
and also then focus on like common user
12:00
Journeys whether it's finding
12:02
information getting work done um I don't
12:04
know how many tabs you have or use but
12:07
so too many you're a to yeah so like how
12:11
do we make it like easier to manage and
12:13
just in general like boost your
12:14
productivity whether you're working
12:16
across apps or doing video conferencing
12:18
or editing or coding in the browser um
12:21
because there's so much browser based
12:22
activity right now and um really try to
12:24
think of like what are the things people
12:25
are doing and how do we make it easier
12:27
and simple yeah I love it let's dive
12:29
into one more donut before we get to our
12:31
last question what we have left um I
12:33
think there was uh uh some sort of Apple
12:36
something um I think it's maybe maybe
12:38
maybe this one yeah I think that one
12:41
there let's let's just try them and see
12:43
what we get here all right all
12:46
right I just a little bit of Apple I
12:48
don't know that I got an apple I think
12:49
maybe a little bit of Apple in there it
12:51
might be a placebo and
12:53
I'm thank you so much for joining today
12:55
we've got one more question and this one
12:57
you know might be uh a little hard for
12:59
you to answer but I'll I'll I'll I'll
13:01
let you give a few answers maybe okay
13:03
what are some of your favorite I'll say
13:05
sum of your favorite features in Chrome
13:08
right now oh that is
13:10
hard um favorite features in Chrome
13:13
right now um well thank you for giving
13:15
me multiple answers yeah I to say your
13:18
favorite yeah I can't do that to you
13:19
it's not fair I'll say the top three
13:21
that come to mind okay favorite most
13:23
recent new feature is we built uh lens
13:25
Google Lens into Chrome and so lens
13:28
absolutely love it allows you to search
13:29
what you see awesome I'm glad you're
13:30
using it it's like new so we're still
13:32
trying to you know improve quality and
13:34
understand what people are using it for
13:36
um but I've used it in a like I want to
13:39
shop for something and I'm like oh I
13:41
like that jacket um and where do I find
13:44
it like in a picture so we've been
13:45
seeing a lot of people using lens to um
13:49
shop uh for school we actually see um a
13:52
lot of good use case there but that's
13:54
one feature um and it's using like all
13:56
Google's latest AI models and just very
13:58
cool image recognition Tech but you
14:00
don't need to know any of that cuz it
14:01
just works it just works yeah y uh I
14:03
flew out to New York yesterday and um
14:07
Wi-Fi was not working I was sitting next
14:09
to a kid and um there's a hidden not
14:13
everyone knows about this but there's a
14:14
hidden offline dyo game um and uh I
14:18
showed this kid next to me and um was
14:21
playing with him and um uh it's actually
14:24
like one of the most popular games if
14:26
you run into you know Wi-Fi issues but a
14:29
favorite feature cuz it's just a fun
14:30
Easter egg and um offline dyo is sort of
14:33
a um kind of a a motto for the team do
14:36
you have you played it before oh yeah
14:37
okay we we have uh play later we have a
14:39
we have a figurine uh in in the office
14:42
and we've named him Dan the dino oh
14:43
awesome so he's a fixture awesome of the
14:45
chroman Box off awesome awesome okay
14:46
it's harder on your phone but you can
14:48
play on your phone too yeah that's two
14:50
and then I think the third one you know
14:51
it's not a feature but the thing that
14:53
I'm like maybe most proud of and that I
14:55
hear often from people is like it just
14:58
works like Chrome just works and I don't
15:00
have to again worry about crashes or you
15:03
know um I don't know this weird thing
15:07
about like will I get hacked or will you
15:09
know this software get hacked but the
15:11
fact that it it just works um we bring
15:13
features in and I think a sort of humble
15:15
modest way um autofill saves me a ton of
15:18
time and that's not a thing that you
15:20
have to like go and manage and conf but
15:22
it just kind of works and um where we
15:25
can remove those little hard edges of
15:27
browsing is is where we think we're
15:29
doing our best work and so just high
15:30
quality product that works is what I'm
15:33
proud of I love it thank you so much for
15:35
taking some time out of out of the busy
15:37
schedule that I'm sure you've got during
15:39
the Chrome Summit I hope you enjoyed
15:41
some donuts totally totally keep it
15:43
going this is this is our new show
15:46
you're the first you're the first guest
15:47
very proud very proud to be a first
15:49
guest yeah thanks so much
15:51
[Music]
15:53
thanks so um I saw something on LinkedIn
15:56
that I thought was interesting this is
15:57
just a bonus question for anybody who
15:59
stuck around here uh I'm pretty sure
16:01
your LinkedIn says security princess is
16:04
that uh I yes I think it does are
16:06
security but well I am uh the
16:09
self-appointed secur princess so to the
16:11
extent um you can
16:14
self-appointed intern um at Google in
16:17
our Central Security team of like hired
16:19
hackers that um kind of we're working
16:21
together just to make Google's products
16:23
safer and then I joined and as a
16:26
full-time engineer and some of my
16:28
colleagues were like hey we're going to
16:29
an industry conference in Japan i' never
16:31
been to a conference outside of the US
16:33
and um they said you have to get
16:35
business cards and I never had business
16:37
cards go Google's my first real job and
16:40
um but in Tokyo or Japan in general like
16:43
really expectation have you ever been
16:44
there I have not love to go you need a
16:46
business card and when you you meet in a
16:48
professional setting you exchange
16:49
business cards it's a thing um so
16:52
anyways we had an internal kind of tool
16:54
to um get cards printed and my title was
16:57
information security engineer in the
16:59
information security engineering team
17:01
and this was like 17 years ago so it
17:03
wasn't as common of a term and it just
17:05
felt like a lot of words and so I I
17:08
changed it to security princess totally
17:09
as a joke cuz I thought it'd be fun and
17:13
uh anyways I got business cards that way
17:15
and I thought it'd be kind of like a
17:16
nice Icebreaker if people saw it and
17:17
they'd be like what uh and it worked and
17:21
it kind of just stuck and I meant it as
17:24
like in a really ironic way cuz I'm not
17:25
very princessy uh uh at least
17:29
stereotypically but it's been really
17:30
cool because like over time you know we
17:32
still have to improve a lot of room to
17:34
improve like representation in Tech and
17:36
cyber security but over time you know
17:39
colleagues or dads have been like oh
17:41
it's so awesome to have like a a
17:42
princess that's an engineer uh and not
17:44
just Disney Princesses so I kind of love
17:46
it I absolutely love it fun little
17:48
tidbit
