as we head into the final parts of 2024
0:07
it's pretty clear that one of the most
0:08
popular and probably one of the most
0:10
important Chromebook releases of the
0:12
year has been the Samsung Galaxy
0:14
Chromebook plus it's a device that
0:16
clearly I like a lot a lot of you seem
0:18
to like it a lot and we reviewed very
0:20
favorably and we were lucky enough to
0:22
sit down with Samsung senior product
0:25
manager Raphael diori and ask some
0:28
questions about like how Samsung went
0:31
about uh making the decisions that they
0:33
made specifically for this device and
0:35
and how the entire Genesis of the
0:37
project came about you probably you all
0:41
guys know uh Samsung was one of the
0:42
first to Pioneer like a premium
0:43
Chromebook right the the Chromebook and
0:45
Chromebook 2 terra terra Q products were
0:47
the first one of their kind it was the
0:49
first time that we introduced a real
0:50
premium experience to the Chromebook
0:53
space overall before it was your basic
0:55
low-end Chromebook for education
0:56
purposes for having on the house which
0:58
is fine by the way but we really brought
1:01
our strategy around premium first for
1:04
PCs into Chromebooks um it had the Q
1:07
which is awesome it had the really nice
1:08
full aluminum body the Spen built in um
1:11
and it was it was one of the first kind
1:13
of products of its kind um and it was
1:16
launched towards at least Chromebook 2
1:19
came in around just before the pandemic
1:21
right and we saw a seismic shift in the
1:24
PC industry during that time so there
1:25
was a couple years of astronomical
1:27
growth followed by a correction period
1:29
right and uh we as I was mentioning
1:33
before part of our role is really to
1:34
understand Insight understand what the
1:36
market is doing and we definitely saw
1:38
there was a lot of turmoil in the market
1:40
um at that time Al also we we saw that
1:43
within the Chromebook space there would
1:45
be limitations in terms of additional
1:47
experiences beyond what we've launched
1:49
already right you wouldn't have
1:50
Chromebook plus didn't really exist a
1:52
couple years ago so when we started the
1:56
conversations with Google around hey
1:57
we're introducing this new uh
2:00
tier of product the Chromebook plus
2:02
intended to double memory double storage
2:04
double performance and really give
2:06
Chromebooks a space within the premium
2:08
Market that's when this conversation
2:09
started to kick off and as you guys know
2:11
we we have a relationship with Google
2:12
that transcent across not just PCS
2:15
obviously our smartphones our tablets
2:17
watches and even some of our other com
2:19
appliances and stuff leverage Google
2:21
technology but um the way that we really
2:25
position it is the union of of great
2:26
minds it's the union of Samsung and
2:29
their Hardware Heritage around building
2:31
really nice really premium devices and
2:33
then how can we bring in Google's
2:34
experience with software everything they
2:36
do with Chrome OS and everything they're
2:37
doing now with the addition of AI which
2:39
is enabling all of these use cases right
2:42
um I talked about that seismic shift um
2:44
we we do a lot of market research and
2:46
all this this stuff and it's not just
2:48
the shift in the PC industry it's also
2:50
the usage habits and again I'm sure you
2:52
guys know during coming out of the
2:55
pandemic we were seeing a lot more
2:56
younger uh people using PCS on a daily
2:58
basis we're seeing consumers use these
3:01
devices more for communication I think
3:03
there's like a statistic that
3:04
communication by video conferencing like
3:06
50x coming out of that coming out of
3:08
this right um we're seeing consumers use
3:10
these devices more for creating content
3:13
for gaming even for streaming content
3:15
like streaming gaming has become a huge
3:17
a huge thing right all these are tasks
3:19
that are perfect on a Chromebook it's
3:22
quick on you have all the information
3:24
there it's it's very easy to access all
3:25
the things that you're familiar with and
3:27
then when obviously we add this
3:28
additional layer of AI and all the
3:30
enhancement that that brings and all the
3:31
productivity use cases that opens up we
3:33
felt it was the time now to reenter that
3:35
space so that's a little bit about how
3:38
we're kind of reading the market seeing
3:39
what the marketings are seeing what we
3:41
can bring to the market in terms of
3:43
value ad and and Innovation and then
3:45
when the time is right and the
3:46
partnership is right is when we kind of
3:48
came together and and brought this idea
3:50
to life so if you've done any research
3:52
on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus or
3:54
watched our review you probably
3:55
recognize a couple things that set this
3:58
Chromebook a little bit apart from some
4:00
of the other ones one is the fact that
4:01
they chose not to go with uh touchcreen
4:03
and the other is why they chose to
4:06
really emphasize it being so thin and
4:08
light and having a nice large trackpad
4:10
well those are really good questions and
4:12
so obviously we asked about those things
4:14
so one of the things and I was hoping
4:16
that you guys would bring it up but I'm
4:18
going to bring it up is touch touchcreen
4:20
so um that was one of the first comments
4:22
that we got it's like hey you know for a
4:23
Chromebook The Experience on a
4:25
Chromebook device is is almost it leans
4:28
into having a touch capability right MH
4:30
mhm um we saw the opportunity obviously
4:32
it's a clamshell device so it's I think
4:34
touch is a nice to have sure uh but not
4:37
strictly necessary like a two in one you
4:38
you kind of think okay without that it's
4:40
it's it's almost you're lacking the
4:41
experience but it's it's a matter of
4:43
trade-off to your point right so we
4:45
could have potentially introduced a
4:46
touchcreen on this device we would have
4:48
had to add an additional uh weight to it
4:51
because it's an additional panel to
4:53
actually receive the touch capabilities
4:55
and that comes with additional expense
4:57
which back to the point we wanted to
4:58
make sure we hit that 6 and price point
5:00
as well as it it consumes more power so
5:02
to run the operation to run you know the
5:04
touch capability requires more juice and
5:07
our our strategy around it is really
5:09
thin and light first so being the
5:10
thinnest and lightest and also having
5:12
the mobility piece right the battery
5:14
life so this is clocking in at about 13
5:16
hours of battery life which again I
5:17
think for what's on the market now is
5:19
probably one of the higher end
5:20
performances you're going to get so it's
5:22
especially with an pel on it exactly
5:24
with with an fhd AMOLED panel so it was
5:27
really around um delivering the right
5:30
experience um and again we we leverage
5:31
insights in terms of where we see the
5:33
market going in terms of configuration
5:34
in terms of chipset in terms of design
5:36
but it's then kind of delivering those
5:38
experiences while keeping it within a a
5:40
reasonable price and in some case it's a
5:42
difficult decision to make you have to
5:43
cut certain features um alternatively
5:46
even though this is coming in at less
5:48
than a half an inch it has I don't you
5:50
guys seen it a full range of ports has
5:52
full HDMI
5:54
USBC yeah the and it's it's it's it's
5:57
full so it's not one of these like you
5:59
know the compact once you got to get a
6:00
dongle to you know display um it has
6:02
audio the audio jack 3.5 mil it has a
6:05
USB type A and even has that micro SD
6:07
for up to 2 terab So within you know a
6:10
space where we have to pick and choose
6:12
certain features to make sure that we
6:13
hit the right experience and the right
6:14
price point we're still trying to cram
6:16
it with as many premium features and as
6:18
much as we can to you know deliver those
6:19
experiences um the key the keyboard is
6:22
um it's not edge to edge but it's it's
6:24
pretty comfortable um it is a keyboard
6:27
that we've used in other devices so it's
6:28
something that we know consumers have
6:30
good good feedback on and the trackpad
6:32
which is as you guys can see is huge
6:34
right um and that's that's one of the
6:36
other points around not having a
6:37
touchcreen itself when a consumer is
6:39
able to get used to the experience of
6:41
utilizing this touchpad this size with
6:43
this keyboard the experience is is is
6:45
pretty much it's pretty much there so
6:47
yeah another thing you might notice
6:49
about the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook plus
6:51
is its size it's 15.6 in and yeah it's
6:54
thin and it's light but that's a larger
6:56
Chromebook for sure and you may be
6:59
wondering to yourself why did Samsung
7:01
choose to go with this size for this
7:03
particular Chromebook so again we we're
7:05
data driven these decisions are come
7:07
come off of us being able to assess uh
7:10
market conditions research uh consumer
7:12
feedback insights and we're seeing
7:14
holistically within the mobile space so
7:17
this is smartphones tablets there's a
7:19
general gravitation towards larger
7:21
screens um as experiences are becoming
7:23
more immersive consumers want that
7:25
additional real estate so with this
7:28
device in particular the 15. 6 in you
7:30
can actually have two documents side by
7:32
side in a visible enough form that you
7:34
actually are able to to work with it if
7:36
you want to watch content you have a
7:38
full 15.6 in display to which enjoy it
7:41
and one of the the pieces of insight
7:43
that we're just um touching on right
7:45
before I came was um when you look at
7:48
purchase drivers so PC and tenders what
7:49
are they looking for when they want to
7:51
make their jump from the current device
7:52
to the new device screen size going from
7:55
their size to a bigger size within the
7:57
top five reasons why they're upgrading
7:58
so we're seeing consumers gravitate more
8:00
towards larger screen devices and in the
8:02
case of Samsung we're able to actually
8:04
keep it thin and light so whereas
8:06
historically you think okay 15.6 in I'm
8:08
going to have three or four l pounds
8:09
that I have to carry around it's going
8:11
to be you know an inch thick it's going
8:13
to have a bulky charger all that is is
8:15
not the same here so you you can still
8:17
maintain it super thin our charger fits
8:19
in the palm of your hand it's fast
8:21
charging by the way so even when the
8:23
batter is kind of getting a little lower
8:24
you back on your feet in no time so um
8:27
that's that's kind of where we decided
8:29
to opt for that that larger screen
8:32
clearly one of the Staples of the
8:34
Samsung Galaxy Chromebook plus and other
8:36
Galaxy Chromebooks that came before it
8:38
is the screen and this one specifically
8:41
is an AMOLED screen um it it may seem
8:43
like a foregone conclusion that Samsung
8:45
would go with this kind of screen for
8:46
this particular device but they've had
8:49
other Galaxy Chromebooks like the Galaxy
8:50
Chromebook 2 that was qled and so we
8:53
were curious why exactly did you choose
8:56
to go full-blown AMOLED on this one
8:58
Samsung has established a Heritage in
9:00
display right it it's really coming from
9:01
our TV display being one of the first to
9:03
introduce a really high-end ol AMOLED
9:06
experience or ol QED experience in some
9:08
cases and we tried to bring that to as
9:11
many premium devices as possible so
9:13
we've seen it within our devices AMOLED
9:14
Dynamic AMOLED 2x is on our s24 family
9:17
it's on our galaxy book 4 family um and
9:20
again when we're speaking about this
9:21
part product in particular and we knew
9:23
that this is going to be an attempt to
9:24
make it a more premium device we want to
9:26
continue that experience into into this
9:28
device so um it is a full HD U fantastic
9:32
viewing you you made a good point about
9:33
the brightness it's 400 nit so even
9:36
though it's conservative it because it's
9:38
AMOLED it gives it that the the look the
9:41
lifelike look when you're looking at you
9:42
know the deep colors the vibrant uh
9:45
shading it's one mill 1 millisecond
9:48
response time so even though uh even
9:50
though you might be gaming or streaming
9:51
gaming the the feel is very smooth it's
9:53
very responsive um again aim to deliver
9:57
a very premium experience even within a
9:58
Chromebook
10:00
environment obviously some of the design
10:02
choices Samsung decided to go with here
10:05
um could alienate a handful of people I
10:07
mean obviously not everybody loves a
10:09
huge Chromebook and not everybody wants
10:11
a device without a touchscreen and
10:12
people want convertibles and all that
10:13
stuff so really it the question comes
10:16
down to when when you make all of these
10:18
particular decisions when you build a
10:20
device that's this nice and a little bit
10:22
on the more expensive side is who'd you
10:24
build it for so so definitely keeping it
10:27
within kind of younger generation I
10:28
think consum consumers that again may
10:30
have had some sort of chrome experience
10:31
in their past whether there it's Chrome
10:33
OS or even just Chrome browser uh which
10:35
are users that again are familiar with
10:36
that
10:37
experience um because of the capability
10:40
of the device because of the features
10:42
now around productivity creativity
10:44
Creation Entertainment we see that
10:46
potentially as students um higher
10:49
education so your college or university
10:50
student or higher education MBA students
10:53
or whatever that might be I would have
10:55
perfectly have used this as a device in
10:57
those years so I I can see that as being
10:59
sort of the target audience there's then
11:02
as I mentioned elderly folk I could
11:04
totally buy this from my mom and she
11:06
would maybe take a couple of days to
11:08
understand a little bit about the UI
11:09
changes and whatnot but it's a very
11:11
limited environment which is great so
11:13
that you don't kind of start deleting
11:15
DLS on on your Windows device and
11:17
completely destroy right so I I can see
11:20
that and again it has all this all the
11:21
features that those consumers are
11:22
looking for it's got great webcam for
11:24
you to communicate it has a great
11:26
display for you to you know consume
11:27
content It's s in light portable so they
11:29
can take it wherever they want to go for
11:30
class or travel or whatever might be um
11:33
there are kind of secondary and tertiary
11:35
markets we've seen for example again
11:37
consumers that plane just don't want to
11:38
have Windows they don't want to have the
11:40
burden of that heavy operating system
11:42
they have a select number of things that
11:43
they do on on PC devices and this device
11:46
or this type of device suits those needs
11:48
perfectly so we're seeing that as a as
11:50
our primary target consumers for this
11:52
kind of product so hopefully that gives
11:54
you some insight uh on why Samsung made
11:57
some of the decisions they did with the
11:59
Samsung Galaxy Chromebook plus I know
12:01
for me now that we're kind of out of the
12:03
review season for the time being uh the
12:06
the the Galaxy Chromebook plus is the
12:08
device that I've chosen to go back to
12:09
over and over again I really do enjoy
12:12
using this Chromebook and getting to see
12:14
some of the behind the- scenes thinking
12:15
that went behind the decisions that were
12:17
made to make this particular device uh
12:20
has been just kind of enlightening for
12:21
me and I hope it's been the same for you
12:23
but that's it for this one if you
12:25
enjoyed this video give us a thumbs up
12:26
head down there hit that subscribe
12:28
button and be sure to ring the not
12:29
ification icon as well if you'd like to
12:31
be alerted when we make future videos
12:32
just like this one till next time we'll
