For over a year, Google’s AI-powered NotebookLM has been exclusively a web-based tool; but that’s about to change. Google has officially acknowledged that a dedicated NotebookLM app is in development, and the addition of this app is a pretty significant step for a service that has proven itself a valuable asset for research and writing.
The confirmation actually came via the official NotebookLM account on X in response to a user inquiry. While details remain sparse for now, this direct acknowledgement right from the source is a clear sign that the new app should be on the way at any point now.
From Web to Mobile
As a reminder, NotebookLM is powered by Google’s Gemini AI and allows users to upload documents and create notebooks for easy summary and organization. The current web-only format, while functional, limits its utility for on-the-go workflows. A native mobile application could enhance this significantly.
The potential benefits extend beyond mere convenience. A mobile app will increase discoverability through app store listings, potentially attracting a wider user base. Furthermore, it offers an opportunity to address existing UI inconsistencies present in the Progressive Web App (PWA) version when on mobile, like overlapping elements and the status bar that never quite follows along with your dark mode preferences.
Development Details and Future Outlook
At this juncture, Google has not specified whether the application will be a fully native build or a wrapped PWA experience. Both approaches have their respective upsides, so it’s unclear which way Google will lean on this one. Additional details such as platform support and a concrete release date are also unavailable for now. Android support is anticipated, given Google’s ecosystem, but we could see an iOS version rolling out at the same time.
If you want a taste of NotebookLM on your mobile device, the PWA option remains a valid choice. On Chrome, navigate to notebooklm.google and use the “Add to home screen” feature. While there are still some quirks with the web version on mobile, this PWA experience can at least get you started for now until this new app arrives. We’ll be keeping an eye on this, and as more information becomes available, we’ll keep you updated.
