Moving from Dropbox to Google Drive just got a whole lot easier with this new tool

For any organization looking to consolidate their tech stack, moving from one cloud storage provider to another is usually the stuff of nightmares. It involves third-party tools, complex scripts, and the constant fear of losing data or breaking permissions.

In a fantastic update for Workspace users and administrators, Google is aiming to make that pain a thing of the past. Available now, the new Data Migration Service has arrived in open beta, and it now supports migrating files and folders directly from Dropbox to Google Drive.

A streamlined path to Google Workspace

This new tool allows organizations to transition easily by securely copying over not just the files and folders, but also their associated permissions. This is critical for ensuring that sensitive data stays secure and accessible to the right people after the move.

The process is designed to be simple and is handled directly within the Google Admin console. Admins simply connect their Dropbox business account, specify which users or team folders to copy, and map them to the appropriate Google MyDrive or Shared Drive.

Powerful features for a smooth move

Google has packed this tool with features to handle real-world migration scenarios:

• Batch Migration: You can migrate data from up to 100 Dropbox users or team folders at a time.
• Delta Updates: This is a lifesaver. The tool supports “delta updates,” meaning if users add or update files in Dropbox while the migration is running, those changes can be caught and migrated over, preventing data gaps.
• Comprehensive Reporting: You get detailed reports on progress, including file counts and error logs for troubleshooting.

This new migration solution is rolling out now (started November 10, 2025) and is available to most Google Workspace customers, including Business, Enterprise, Education, and Nonprofit editions. You can find it in the Admin console under Menu > Data > Data Import & export > Data Migration (New).
