It’s no secret that at least one MediaTek Kompanio Ultra-powered Chromebook is on the way and that this upcoming device’s code name is ‘Navi’. Based on the ‘Rauru’ baseboard, this device could be the absolute must-buy Chromebook for those who prize a large display, blazing performance, long battery life, and a thin/light form factor.

Based on the reception of the excellent Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus that retains most of these features already, I’d say that ‘Navi’ is in a spot to quickly become the best overall Chromebook you can buy in 2025 when it does finally arrive.

After all, we already know that it will come with a massive 16-inch 4K 16:10 display and it will likely be quite thin and light thanks to the ARM processor inside. And we know it will be the most powerful Chromebook around when it launches as well, with fantastic battery life and tons of built-in AI smarts, too. The Kompanio Ultra from MediaTek will power the entire experience and from the looks of what they’ve put together, this SoC will be incredibly formidable.

Add OLED to the list of superlatives

And now, we can add an OLED screen to the list of amazing features we’re expecting from ‘Navi’ at some point this year. Based on some pretty clear language in a code change submitted to in the Chromium Gerrit, it is quite clear that ‘Navi’ will be shipping with a big, bright, 4K OLED panel.

We know from a prior find that this 4K screen is bright at 800 nits and stands tall at a 16:10 aspect ratio as well. If you’ve ever seen the Acer Chromebook 516 GE or Lenovo Gaming Laptop, you have an idea of the luscious screen real estate we’re talking about, here. Those devices are QHD (enough in my opinion) and the massive canvas makes working from just about anywhere a complete and utter breeze. I absolutely love this screen size and aspect ratio.

Add in the fact that it will be an OLED panel with those inky blacks, insane contrast ratios, and gorgeous color accuracy and this new ‘Navi’ device might come out of the gate with the best overall display we’ve ever had on a Chromebook.

For now, it does appear that ‘Navi’ won’t be a convertible and likely won’t come with a touchscreen; though the latter could technically change. However, with these larger Chromebooks (the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus, Acer 516 GE, Lenovo Gaming Chromebook, etc.), I know I’ve not found the lack of touch input to be much of a bother in day-to-day usage.

From the looks of the development for ‘Navi’, I’m 100% betting we get at least a reveal at the (hopefully) upcoming Chromebook Showcase at some point in May or June. We still have no official word on that event, but the likelihood is high that we’ll be getting some invite info soon, and the chance that we get there and get to see ‘Navi’ is quite high. And if you’re like me, that’s some pretty exciting stuff.
