If you utilize Google Home to keep your digital life running smoothly, things are about to get a lot more capable. Google is rolling out a comprehensive update this May that touches almost every corner of the smart home experience, from the brains powering your voice commands to the way you interact with your security cameras.
Gemini 3.1 brings true multi-tasking to your home
Perhaps the most exciting under-the-hood change is the upgrade to Gemini 3.1 for users in the Gemini for Home early access program. Google says this is their most advanced model yet, featuring significantly improved reasoning capabilities designed to handle complex, multi-step requests.
Instead of directing individual commands at your smart speaker, you can now chain tasks together naturally. According to the Google Nest Community post, you can add items to a list and update existing ones in a single breath, or string together alarms, calendar updates, and smart home controls without skipping a beat.
A much-needed camera overhaul
Anyone with a Nest camera knows that scrubbing through video history hasn’t always been the smoothest experience. Google is tackling this head-on with a modernized camera interface within the Home app. The upgrades include:
- Zoomed-in Previews: Event notifications will now automatically crop and focus on the subject triggering the alert, saving you time when viewing real-time video with your phone.
- Smoother Navigation: A refreshed UI promises faster navigation, smoother video scrubbing, and an enhanced event list that lets you scroll through your timeline without closing the video player.
- Legacy Support: Notably, Google is bringing some of these popular new features to earlier generation cameras, not just the latest hardware.
‘Ask Home on Web’ and deeper automations
For ChromeOS and desktop users, managing the smart home is getting much easier. Google is introducing Ask Home on Web (coming soon to Public Preview). This feature will allow you to search through your camera history, check device statuses, and even create complex home automations directly from your computer’s browser.
Speaking of automations, the update introduces expanded traits, allowing you to build routines around more specific device states. The Keyword announcement notes you can now easily monitor and trigger actions based on things like robot vacuum status, appliance cycles, door locks, and even device battery levels.
Finally, for users managing multiple properties, the app’s notifications are getting smarter. New “Quick Action” buttons in notifications will let you jump instantly to the exact device panel, automatically switching homes in the background without requiring extra taps.
These updates are a massive step forward in making the Google Home experience feel truly integrated and intelligent. If you want to test out features like Ask Home on Web or the new notification system, be sure to opt into the Public Preview within your Google Home app settings.
