YouTube has officially launched its Premium Lite plan in the United States, a move that follows closely on the heels of reports indicating its imminent arrival. Priced at $7.99 per month, this new subscription tier aims to provide users with an ad-free viewing experience for the majority of YouTube’s content – but not all YouTube content.
The now-formal launch represents a more budget-friendly alternative to the standard YouTube Premium subscription, which stands at $13.99 per month. However, for anyone interested, it’s crucial to understand the distinctions between the two.
YouTube Premium vs. Premium Lite
The primary difference lies in the exclusion of YouTube Music from the Premium Lite package. Consequently, while Premium Lite subscribers will enjoy ad-free viewing on a wide array of content, music videos will still be subject to advertisements. Furthermore, the YouTube Music app will retain ads for Lite subscribers. Additional limitations include the absence of video and music downloads for offline consumption, as well as the unavailability of background play.

In essence, the core value proposition of YouTube Premium Lite is the removal of ads from most non-music video content. As YouTube states, the plan is designed to “make sure we have the right balance of features and benefits for those viewers who want to watch most videos ad-free – whether it’s gaming, comedy, cooking or learning.” For those seeking an ad-free music experience, along with offline and background play capabilities, the standard Premium plan remains the recommended option.
Google is rolling out YouTube Premium Lite as a pilot program in the United States, and the updated version of the plan will also be made available in Thailand, Germany, and Australia, the countries where it was previously in testing. So, if you are in the US and have been waiting to sign up for YouTube Premium Lite or downgrade your existing YouTube Premium account, now is the time.
