Earlier this year, Google took a significant step by integrating native AI image editing directly into AI Studio. The positive reception to that initial roll-out has paved the way for the next evolution, as these powerful creative tools are now expanding to be included right in the Gemini app.
This integration marks a notable enhancement for Gemini, moving beyond text-based interactions to offer sophisticated image manipulation. Users will soon find the ability to easily modify not only images generated by Gemini itself but also personal photos uploaded directly from their phone or computer. The possibilities are quite broad, encompassing actions like seamlessly changing an image’s background, replacing unwanted objects, or even adding entirely new elements into a scene. I imagine uploading a selfie and prompting Gemini to visualize me with a beard and getting to see what that would look like right in the main chat UI.
The power lies in the intuitive, multi-step editing process. This allows for richer, more contextual interactions where basic text prompts and small changes to your images happen simply and intuitively. For instance, you could ask Gemini to draft a children’s bedtime story about dragons and then use the integrated tools to generate accompanying illustrations, refining them as you go.
As with all AI-generated imagery stemming from Google’s tools, images created or edited using this new native feature within Gemini will include the invisible SynthID digital watermark, helping to identify AI-assisted content. Google is also experimenting with adding a visible watermark to all images generated by Gemini for further transparency.
The roll-out of native image editing within the Gemini app begins gradually today and will expand over the coming weeks to eventually reach users in most countries with support for over 45 languages. And for non-photographers like myself, this is a very compelling feature addition. Being able to simply ask Gemini to make a photo look more like what I imagine sounds pretty awesome, and I can’t wait to take this for a spin very soon.
