Chrome has long offered a handy accessibility feature called “Read this page” that allows the browser to read the current webpage aloud. It’s a simple tool, but incredibly useful for those who prefer listening to content, multitasking, or have accessibility needs. While the current iteration is functional, with Gemini, it feels like there’s so much more potential.
We’ve seen Google explore this functionality in other areas, like Google Assistant’s ability to read web pages. This integration, while convenient, still lacks the natural language and fluidity of Gemini Live that would truly elevate the experience. Google Assistant’s voice is fine, but it’s nothing like the lifelike quality of Gemini Live.
It’s pretty easy to imagine a future where the “Read this page” feature is powered by Gemini’s smooth vocals. The difference would be night and day. Instead of a monotone drone, we could have a dynamic, expressive voice that captures the nuances of the written word.
Look at NotebookLM and the realistic podcasts you get from that service (powered under the hood by Gemini). In seconds, Gemini Live could read the page, figure out the nuances, and deliver a rich, well-read audio file that would be awesome to experience. And don’t even get me started on something like this for books!
The potential is enormous. While we don’t have any concrete information whatsoever about Google integrating Gemini with the “Read this page” feature, the possibilities are tantalizing; and the path to get there seems pretty straightforward. If the existing versions of this feature are useful as they are now, the introduction of Gemini’s voice could truly revolutionize how we interact with online content. And I simply can’t imagine it not happening at some point. What do you say, Google?
