The threat of online scams is a constant battle, and as technology evolves, so do the tactics of bad actors. With AI tools like voice cloning and deepfakes making impersonations more convincing than ever, spotting a scam is getting harder. In response, Google is continuously innovating and rolling out new security features built directly into its products.

In a new blog post, Google has highlighted six new ways it’s working to protect you from scams, ranging from enhanced messaging security to new account recovery methods and educational initiatives.

Making Google Messages safer

Scammers often use text messages to lure victims, so Google is bolstering the defenses in its Messages app:

  • Safer Links: Google Messages will now warn you if it suspects a message is spam when you click on any links within it. It will stop you from visiting potentially harmful websites unless you explicitly mark the message as safe. This is rolling out globally now.
  • Key Verifier: This new tool adds an extra layer of trust by allowing you to scan a QR code for your contacts, providing extra assurance that your end-to-end encrypted messages are truly private and with the right person. It’s available now for Android 10+ users.

Easier and more secure account recovery

Losing access to your Google Account can be a bit of a nightmare. Google is expanding its recovery tools to make regaining access easier and more secure:

  • Recovery Contacts: You can now designate trusted friends or family members as Recovery Contacts. If you get locked out, these contacts can help verify your identity, providing a simple way back in when standard methods fail.
  • Sign in with Mobile Number: To make recovery easier if your phone is lost or stolen, Google is introducing a way to sign in on a new Android device using just your phone number and the lock-screen passcode from your previous device – no password needed. This is rolling out gradually worldwide.

Boosting scam awareness and education

Beyond built-in tools, Google is investing in educating users on how to spot scams:

  • “Be Scam Ready” Game: This interactive game immerses you in real-life scam scenarios in a safe environment, helping you learn to identify common tactics and develop critical thinking skills to avoid fraud.
  • Protecting Vulnerable Users: Google is partnering with organizations like the National Cybersecurity Alliance and AARP to distribute resources, develop national strategies, and host workshops aimed at protecting youth and older adults from fraud.

These updates represent a comprehensive effort by Google to stay ahead of scammers in an increasingly complex digital world. By combining built-in technological safeguards with user education, Google is aiming to create a safer online environment for everyone.
