Google’s AI-powered research assistant, NotebookLM, has quickly become a favorite tool for anyone who needs to understand and synthesize large amounts of information. Today, in a significant and thoughtful expansion, Google is making NotebookLM available to younger users to help them learn, study, and understand their class materials.
This expansion means NotebookLM is now available for Google Workspace for Education users of all ages and for consumers aged 13 and up.
A powerful study partner for students
NotebookLM acts as an AI-powered thinking partner that is grounded in the documents you provide. Students can now upload their lesson plans, lecture notes, and course readings to get real-time help. With this new access, they can:
- Turn their notes into a podcast-like Audio Overview in multiple languages
- Visualize connections in their sources with interactive Mind Maps
- Ask questions to deepen their understanding of their materials
- Generate quizzes, discussion questions, and more from their materials
Built with safety and privacy in mind
Google is making it clear that this expanded access comes with robust protections. NotebookLM has stricter content policies for users under 18 that help prevent potentially inappropriate or harmful responses.
Crucially, for all users, your chats and the sources you upload are not human-reviewed or used to train AI models. For schools, NotebookLM is now a core Workspace service, meaning it includes enterprise-grade data protections and supports compliance with regulations like FERPA and COPPA.
Availability and admin controls
NotebookLM is now available in over 180 regions and supports more than 35 languages. The rollout for all Workspace for Education users (Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus) is a full rollout that began on August 4, 2025. For schools, the service is enabled by default, but administrators have full control and can turn NotebookLM on or off for users as they see fit.
