Google’s ‘Personal Intelligence’ for free Gemini and Chrome users in the U.S. is a game changer

When Google first introduced Personal Intelligence earlier this year, it was the ultimate “pro” feature. It allowed the AI to securely “connect the dots” across your Gmail, Google Photos, and other apps to give you answers that were actually about your life. But until now, you had to be a paid subscriber to use it.

That has all changed, recently. According to an announcement from Google, Personal Intelligence is now expanding in the U.S. to everyone on the free tier across AI Mode in Search, the Gemini app, and Gemini in Chrome.

What is Personal Intelligence?

If you’ve ever felt frustrated that an AI doesn’t know you just bought a new pair of shoes or that you have a flight in two hours, this is the fix. By opting in, you allow Gemini to securely reference your personal data to provide tailored help without you having to explain the context every single time. Here are a few ways this looks in action:

  • Intelligent Troubleshooting: If you’re having trouble with a tech gadget, you can just ask for help. Gemini can find the exact model from your Gmail receipts and give you specific debugging steps like factory resets tailored to that device.
  • Proactive Travel Help: If you have a layover, Gemini can suggest food options that account for your dietary preferences, your exact arrival/departure gates, and exactly how much time you have before boarding based on your flight confirmations.
  • Tailored Shopping: Looking for a bag to match those new shoes? Gemini can look at your recent purchases and recommend options that match the specific hardware and style of what you already own.

Coming to Gemini in Chrome

For us at Chrome Unboxed, the most exciting part is the expansion to Gemini in Chrome. As this rolls out, the Gemini side panel in your browser becomes much more than a summary tool. It becomes a persistent assistant that knows your schedule and your files, helping you connect the dots while you’re actually browsing the web.

Google is being very loud about the fact that this is off by default. You have to explicitly choose to connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos, and you can toggle those connections off at any time. Crucially, Google states that Gemini and AI Mode do not train directly on your private Gmail inbox or Photos library. They only use limited information to improve the system over time.

Availability

Personal Intelligence is available right now in the U.S. for AI Mode in Search and is currently rolling out to free-tier users in the Gemini app and Gemini in Chrome. Note that this is strictly for personal Google accounts for now; Workspace business, enterprise, and education users are still waiting in the wings for this level of personal integration.
