Google Voice’s entry-level ‘Starter’ plan just got two massive, premium features

November 13, 2025 By Robby Payne View Comments

For small businesses and organizations, Google Voice has always been a fantastic tool. It’s simple, integrates perfectly with Workspace, and just works. But for the entry-level “Starter” plan (which supports up to 10 users), there have always been two glaring omissions that forced many small teams to either upgrade or look elsewhere: the inability to use physical desk phones and the lack of on-demand call recording.

In a fantastic update rolling out now, Google is fixing both of those issues, bringing these Standard and Premier features down to the Starter tier.

Desk phone support is finally here

Organizations on the Google Voice Starter plan can now provision and manage compatible desk phones and adapters. This means your small team isn’t stuck taking calls exclusively on laptops or mobile apps anymore. You can now deploy traditional hardware, like compatible Polycom devices, or use Analog Telephone Adapters (ATAs) to connect existing office phones.

It provides a level of flexibility and professionalism that was previously paywalled behind higher tiers, allowing users to make and receive calls on the hardware they prefer.

On-demand call recording for everyone

The second major addition is on-demand call recording. End users on the Starter plan will now see a simple, intuitive record button in the Google Voice interface during active calls.

This is massive for training, compliance, or just keeping a record of important client details without needing to scramble for a pen. It turns the Starter plan into a much more complete business solution.

How to get it

These features are rolling out gradually starting November 12, 2025.

  • Desk Phones: This feature must be explicitly enabled by an administrator before you can add devices.
  • Call Recording: This will be ON by default for Voice Starter add-on subscriptions, though admins can disable it. (Note: There are no admin controls for standalone personal Voice Starter subscriptions).

This update makes the Google Voice Starter plan exponentially more valuable for small businesses, removing the biggest barriers to entry and making it a truly viable, professional phone system for teams of any size.
