In terms of current social media trends, vertical video is king. But since its launch, Google’s simple and powerful video creation tool, Google Vids, has had one major limitation: it was built exclusively for traditional, widescreen (16:9) videos. This made it a non-starter for anyone looking to create content for platforms like YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels.
That limitation is now a thing of the past. In a much-needed update, Google has announced that it is now rolling out support for creating and editing videos in both vertical (9:16) and square (1:1) formats.

This is a simple but essential update that gives creators far more flexibility to build content tailored for the platforms where people spend most of their time. Whether you’re making a quick video for YouTube Shorts, an Instagram Reel, or a TikTok, you can now build it from start to finish right within Google Vids. To make the process even easier, Google also announced that vertical and square templates will be coming soon.
The best part about this update is that it’s for everyone. This isn’t a premium, paid feature; it’s rolling out to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual Subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.
The update is in a gradual roll-out now and should be fully available to all users by October 21st. This is a critical step in making Google Vids a truly versatile and modern video creation tool for everyone.
