Earlier this year, Google began testing an interesting new feature for Google TV aimed at delivering concise news updates directly to your television screen. Dubbed “News Brief,” this Gemini-powered addition initially surfaced for a limited group of users on the platform’s “For You” page. The promise was a quick, AI-curated overview of the day’s top stories, with plans to integrate it more deeply into the Google TV experience via the Ambient mode hub.
It appears that broader integration is now underway. Reports around the web indicate the News Brief feature is becoming more widely available, specifically rolling out to the Google TV Streamer and Chromecast with Google TV devices within the US market. This isn’t appearing on the main interface just yet, but rather within the device’s screensaver settings. It’s worth noting that our Onn Google TV 4K Pro also has the News Brief option available, too.
To check if it’s available for you, navigate into your Google TV’s settings, find the Ambient mode options, and look for a new selection labeled “Top news.” Enabling this option should introduce a “Top News” card, typically positioned in the upper-left corner when Ambient mode is active.
This card displays curated news headlines, courtesy of Google’s AI, along with the publication time. Users can cycle through different stories presented on the card. For a more in-depth look, pressing the ‘OK’ button on your remote while the card is highlighted triggers the full News Brief experience. This opens a dedicated interface that reads an AI-generated summary aloud while displaying the text summary below the headline. Complementing the brief, a selection of related YouTube videos will appear, offering pathways to explore the story further.
It’s important to note that this feature is still officially in beta. Google also offers a standard disclaimer for AI-generated content: it may not always be perfect and could potentially make errors in curation or summarization. Furthermore, they caution that the news feed might include stories covering sensitive or potentially disturbing topics, advising user discretion, especially in households with young children.
While getting news briefs on your TV during Ambient mode is a pretty cool concept, time will tell how useful users find it compared to the established habit of catching up on news via smartphones or other devices. Still, it represents another step in Google’s efforts to leverage AI for enhancing user experiences across its hardware ecosystem.
