If you have ever felt like the Google Search algorithm is ignoring the news outlets you actually want to read, there’s a new-ish tool that you’ve likely not been using effectively. That tool is Preferred Sources, and Google is officially expanding this tool, handing the reins of the Top Stories carousel back to the users.
This feature initially launched in the latter half of 2025, but it was limited to specific regions and English queries. Now, Google has announced that the tool is available in all supported languages across the globe.
Taking control of your news feed
The concept behind Preferred Sources is simple: instead of being entirely at the mercy of the algorithm, you get to explicitly tell Google which publications you trust and want to see more frequently when researching news topics.

To use it, you can just click the star icon at the top of the Top Stories section of your search results. Tapping that icon shows you your entire list you can search for and add any site you’d like to you preferred list from there. It doesn’t block other news sources, but it ensures your chosen outlets are prioritized when they cover a relevant topic.
A massive early adoption
According to Google’s announcement on The Keyword, the feature is already a massive hit. Readers are reportedly twice as likely to click through to an article after marking a site as a Preferred Source. To date, users have already favorited over 200,000 unique sites, ranging from massive global news desks to niche local blogs.
If you want to start curating your feed, you don’t have to wait until you stumble across a specific site in the Search results. You can manage your entire list directly by heading over to google.com/preferences/source. It is a fantastic tool to cut through the noise, and if you happen to add Chrome Unboxed to your own preferred list while you are setting things up, we certainly won’t complain!
