Google has pulled back the curtain on what they are calling the biggest navigation upgrade in over a decade. By weaving their most capable Gemini models directly into the Google Maps experience, the app is transforming from a static directory into a conversational AI assistant that understands the world and your needs at a much deeper level. From planning complex trips to navigating tricky city interchanges, here is everything new in Google Maps.
Ask Maps: Your conversational guide
The headline feature is Ask Maps, a new way to explore that ditches traditional keyword searches for natural conversation. Instead of hunting through endless reviews for “coffee shops with WiFi,” you can now just ask: “My phone is dying—where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?”
Because it’s powered by Gemini, Ask Maps can synthesize information from over 300 million places and reviews from a community of 500 million contributors. It provides personalized, nuanced answers like suggesting a midway meeting spot that fits your specific vegan preference or helping you plan a multi-stop road trip through the Grand Canyon with insider tips from real people. Ask Maps is rolling out now in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS, with a desktop version coming soon.
Immersive Navigation: A 3D view of your drive
While Ask Maps handles the discovery, Immersive Navigation is all about the journey. This is a complete visual transformation of the driving experience. Your route now comes to life with a vivid 3D view that accurately reflects buildings, terrain, and overpasses.
Using Gemini to analyze billions of Street View and aerial images, Google Maps now provides a spatial understanding of your route that highlights critical details like:
- Lane-level guidance: Know exactly which lane you need to be in for that tricky merge.
- Visual cues: See crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs represented in the 3D map.
- Natural voice guidance: Instead of robotic “Turn left in 500 feet,” you’ll hear more human directions like, “Go past this exit and take the next one for Illinois 43 South.”
Stress-free arrival
Google is also taking the guesswork out of the final stretch of your drive. Immersive Navigation now allows you to preview your destination with Street View imagery before you even leave. As you approach, the map will clearly highlight the building’s entrance, nearby parking, and which side of the street you need to be on.
Immersive Navigation is rolling out today in the U.S. across iOS, Android, CarPlay, and Android Auto, with broader availability coming over the next few months.
Real-time tradeoffs
Finally, Maps is becoming more transparent about your route options. Incorporating over 5 million traffic updates every second, Google Maps will now show you the specific tradeoffs for alternate routes; like choosing between a longer trip with no tolls or a faster one that might be more expensive.
This update marks a fundamental shift for Google Maps, and moving Gemini into its most-used products, Google is proving that AI isn’t just a chatbot gimmick any longer: it’s the new infrastructure for how we navigate the physical world.
