googleongooglewifiA few days ago, an update occurred that is rolling out to users across the board. Google On, the app formerly used for controlling the OnHub routers is now becoming Google Wifi.

The change gives us some hope about a shipping date for Google Wifi.

Back in late October, we reported on the change that transformed the Google Cast app into Google Home. It was a very, very similar move. This particular transition to Google Wifi seems even more clear and concise, though.

OnHub has been Google’s Wifi solution up until now, giving users a roughly $200 router with app controls and Google’s promise of reliability and ease of use.

I don’t have any hard numbers, but I don’t think OnHub was a runaway success for anyone involved. ASUS and TP-Link both made OnHub branded routers and this program was very similar to the Nexus program: 3rd party hardware with Google’s vision for internals and software.

Just like we are seeing with the Google Pixel, when Google gets thing in house and puts their considerable marketing muscle behind it, the result has been very good. Marketing makes a big difference.

The move of the app from a somewhat-strange Google On name to a simple, clear Google Wifi name is definitely a step in the right direction.

Additionally, with the name of the new routers simply being Google Wifi, this new app name should be a simpler route for general consumers to clearly understand, find and use. From what we gather, just like with the Google Cast to Google Home transition, the app itself is much the same. This is more of a rename than anything. OnHub users will still be able to use the app as they have before.

Shipping Date Clues?

Finally, if we take all the parallels between these two changes and draw a few more conclusions, we may be able to nail down a window for shipping on the Google Wifi device.

In October, when we reported the app name change for Google Home, it was 10 days later that the Chromecast Ultra (one of the devices directly impacted by this app change) started shipping.

When I ordered Google Wifi on day 1, it was 18 days ago. November 17 2016. At that time, the listing indicated a ship date 2-3 weeks out. If this app name change is any indicator, Google is about to start pushing Google Wifi out the door very soon. This would also fall right in line with the original ship date estimates as well.

Could we see Google Wifi start hitting people’s hands this week? Only time will tell, but you can be sure that when ours ships, we will let you know!
