Google Maps is already one of the most helpful and essential apps on our phones, but it’s about to get a whole lot smarter. In a new blog post, Google has announced a massive Gemini upgrade for Maps, transforming the app from a simple direction-giver into a truly conversational, all-knowing co-pilot. This big update introduces four major new capabilities, including a new conversational driving experience and landmark-based navigation.
Conversational Gemini in navigation
The headline feature is the deep integration of Gemini into the hands-free driving experience in the Google Maps app. Google describes it as “having a knowledgeable friend in the passenger seat”. This means you can move beyond rigid commands and have more natural, multi-step conversations.
For example, you can ask complex questions like, “Is there a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options along my route, something within a couple miles? … What’s parking like there?” and then simply follow up with, “OK, let’s go there”.
With your permission, Gemini can even connect to your other apps, like adding “soccer practice tomorrow for 5 p.m.” to your Calendar, all without you taking your hands off the wheel. You can also ask for news, sports scores, or even what dishes are popular at the restaurant you’re heading to. This new conversational driving experience starts rolling out in the coming weeks on Android and iOS, with Android Auto support on the way.
Real-world landmark navigation
This is a feature I’ve been waiting for. We’ve all been frustrated by the vague “turn right in 500 feet” command. Now, Google Maps will use Gemini to provide much clearer, real-world directions.
It will identify easy-to-spot landmarks like gas stations or restaurants and tell you to “turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant,” highlighting it on your map as you approach. Gemini does this by analyzing Maps’ 250 million places and cross-referencing them with Street View images to find the most useful, visible landmarks. This is rolling out now on Android and iOS in the U.S..
Proactive traffic alerts
There’s nothing worse than getting stuck in a surprise traffic jam. A new feature will now proactively notify you of disruptions on the road ahead—like unexpected closures or heavy traffic—even if you’re not actively navigating. This is rolling out now for Android users in the U.S.
‘Lens in Maps’ gets conversational AI
When you arrive at your destination, the features don’t stop. You can now tap the camera icon in the search bar, point your phone at a place, and when the pins appear, tap the mic to ask conversational questions about it. You can ask things like, “What is this place and why is it popular?“ or “What’s the vibe inside?”. This powerful combination of Lens and Gemini starts rolling out later this month in the U.S.
If you ask me, this is the stuff AI is made for. Pictures and videos are impressive, sure, but this type of integration fundamentally changed the way we interact with core applications; and I think we all know this is just the beginning. I’m already imagining all of these features and more being part of Google-made AR glasses down the road, and that future feels closer and closer every single day.
