Google makes the Pixel 9a official with impressive specs in 4 colors

After an absolute torrent of very accurate leaks, the Pixel 9a is now official; and, as expected, it brings a ton of impressive hardware and software inclusions to Google’s A-Series lineup. Google has packed some great features into this more-affordable Pixel that starts at $499, so let’s take a closer look at what Google has included this time around.

Design and Durability

The Pixel 9a sports a fresh design with a streamlined camera bar that is a bit of a departure for both the Pixel lineup as a whole and for the A-series as well. It’s Google’s most durable A-Series phone yet, featuring a metal frame and improved IP68 protection against water and dust.

The new Gorilla Glass 3 covering on the Actua display should help your phone continue looking good throughout the time you own it, too. Google has also made an effort to be environmentally conscious by using recycled aluminum, glass, and plastic in the phone’s construction. The back cover is 81% recycled plastic, and the packaging is 100% plastic-free. Again, as previously leaked, you can snag the Pixel 9a in four colors: Iris, Peony, Porcelain, and Obsidian.  

Display

The Pixel 9a comes with a 6.3-inch Actua display. The pOLED screen has a 20:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1080 x 2424 at 422.2 PPI. It also boasts a 60-120Hz variable refresh rate to curb battery usage a bit; though it won’t get down to the 1Hz limits we see on the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro.

As for the brightness of this Actua display, Google says it can reach up to 1800 nits in HDR and up to 2700 nits at peak brightness, with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and full 24-bit depth for 16 million colors. The bezels look to be a tad bit thicker than the similarly-sized Pixel 9, but not by much.  

Performance and Battery

Under the hood, the Pixel 9a is powered by the same Google Tensor G4 processor you get in the Pixel 9 series. It comes with 8GB of RAM and offers storage options of 128GB or 256GB.

Battery life should be very good on this device, too, with over 30 hours of life on a charge, and up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver. The battery has a typical capacity of 5100 mAh (minimum 5000 mAh) and supports fast charging up to 23W and wireless charging at 7.5W.

While those charging speeds won’t blow anyone’s mind, the battery life on this one should be stellar. My Pixel 9 Pro XL is an absolute battery beast, so a slightly larger battery in a device with a smaller display should easily go all day and well into a second. We’ll need to test this, obviously, but the numbers definitely look good on that front.

Camera Capabilities

Being a Pixel and having a smaller camera hump, I’m sure many of you are wondering about the overall quality of the cameras on this latest 9a. Starting with the rear cameras, we get a 48MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide camera. For the first time in the A-Series, it also includes Macro Focus. Features like Add Me, Night Sight, and Astrophotography are all here, too, and Real Tone is included to ensure accurate representation of all skin tones in photos and videos.  

The front-facing camera is a 13MP ultrawide (96.1° field of view) that can capture video at 4K30 and is wide enough to get the whole group in on selfies. While not the 42MP selfie shooter you get on the Pixel 9 series, this tested front-camera setup should take care of business just fine – especially when paired up with Google’s awesome camera software.

Speaking of software, the Pixel 9a also gets the full suite of editing tools like Best Take for perfect group photos, Photo Unblur, Magic Editor for reframing and expanding images, and Reimagine to give your photos a new look. Pixel Studio also lets you create memes and stickers on the fly.  

For videos, the rear camera can record 4K video at 30/60 FPS and 1080p video at 30/60 FPS, with digital zoom up to 5x. Video features include Audio Magic Eraser, Macro Focus Video, Cinematic Pan, and support for slo-mo video up to 240 FPS.  

Software and Special Features

Of course, the Pixel 9a comes with Gemini, Google’s built-in AI assistant. Gemini can help with writing, planning, finding information, and taking action across your Google apps. You can chat with Gemini or use Gemini Live for natural conversations.  

Additionally, Pixel 9a will receive regular Pixel Drops, which include new features and updates for camera, battery, calling, AI, and more, for 7 years. Being a Pixel owner for the past few years, I can tell you that these Pixel Drops are always loaded with awesome features every time they come around.  

Security and Family Features

Security is a priority with the Pixel 9a. It includes features to protect against spam, scams, and threats, and offers safety features for emergencies. Emergency SOS, Crisis Alerts, Car Crash Detection, and Safety Check are all included, too.

For families, it’s easy to set up a Pixel for kids and establish digital ground rules with Family Link. Parents can manage privacy settings, screen time limits, and location sharing, and now there are additional controls for school time.  

Availability

The Pixel 9a is designed to be personalized, with options to choose your preferred color and storage (128GB or 256GB). Google has a similar line of cases in all 4 colors as well, so you’ll be able to mix and match as you see fit. It also comes with 3 months of Google One, 3 months of YouTube Premium, and 6 months of Fitbit Premium.  

Pixel 9a starts at $499 (128GB version) and will be available at the Google Store (where you can also check out those colorful new cases) and through retail partners beginning in April. A firm date has not been set, but as soon as we know for certain, we’ll update the post.
