The main event is finally here! While Google got a jump on its Android announcements last week with “The Android Show: I/O Edition,” where they highlighted the redesigned Material 3 Expressive interface, Google I/O 2025 truly kicks off in earnest today, Tuesday, May 20th. The opening keynote is set to begin at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET, and it’s shaping up to be an information-dense dive into Google’s latest and greatest.

How to watch Google I/O 2025

The main Google Keynote will run for about 1 hour and 45 minutes today, followed by the Developer Keynote from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM PT after a short break. You can tune into the livestream on Google’s I/O site or its YouTube channel (there’s also an ASL version). We’ve embedded the main keynote stream right here for easy viewing, too.

What we’re expecting: AI takes center stage

With Android largely covered last week, all signs point to AI being the dominant theme of today’s main keynote. Here’s a quick rundown of what we’re anticipating on the AI front:

  • Updates on Google’s flagship Gemini AI model
  • Progress reports and potential new capabilities for Project Astra
  • New advancements for Google’s generative tools like Imagen (image generation) and Veo (video generation)
  • And, of course, a host of new Gemini-powered features making their way into phones, services, and other devices

Any more on Android XR?

Android XR Google I/O 2025 teasers and demo

After those tantalizing teasers at “The Android Show” last week – namely Sameer Samat sporting those XR sunglasses and another glimpse of Samsung’s “Project Moohan” headset – our hopes are definitely high for more substantial Android XR news. Samsung has indicated its Project Moohan headset is still on track for a launch this year, so I/O would be the prime time for Google to really detail the software platform, perhaps show off some compelling demos, and maybe even give us some concrete hardware details or pricing hints for these upcoming lighthouse devices.

What not to expect

Given that Android news had its own showcase, and Google’s clear desire to put AI in the spotlight for the main I/O keynote, we’re not expecting major announcements around ChromeOS, new Pixel phones, Nest smart home hardware, or standard wearables today.

And while there are a few on-demand sessions that might give us a little more information about ChromeOS’ transition to the Android kernel, I definitely don’t see this making the keynote today. Google is likely saving this announcement for the Chromebook Showcase that we assume is right around the corner. The spotlight today seems firmly fixed on AI and potentially the new frontier of XR.

It’s going to be a packed couple of hours, so buckle up! Also, we’ll be doing a live chat with our Chrome Unboxed Plus community over on Discord, so make sure to sign up for your 7-day free trial if you haven’t already, so you can join in on the fun. Stay tuned to Chrome Unboxed for all the latest from Google I/O 2025!
