Gemini 2.5 Pro has already established itself as Google’s top-tier model, excelling in areas like coding and complex reasoning. Google shared that it’s now not only a leader on academic benchmarks but also tops popular real-world leaderboards like WebDev Arena (for coding) and LMArena (which measures human preference for model responses). Plus, thanks to integration with LearnLM (Google’s family of models fine-tuned for education), 2.5 Pro is now being touted as the leading model for learning, preferred by educators for its teaching effectiveness.
The most tantalizing news for 2.5 Pro is an experimental new enhanced reasoning mode announced at Google I/O 2025 called Deep Think. This isn’t your everyday AI; Deep Think uses advanced techniques that allow the model to consider multiple angles and hypotheses before giving an answer. Google says it’s already showing impressive results on incredibly difficult math and coding benchmarks. Because this is pushing the boundaries, Deep Think will first be made available to trusted testers via the Gemini API before any wider release, allowing for thorough safety evaluations; but it’s a glimpse into some seriously powerful AI reasoning capabilities.
Gemini 2.5 Flash gets even better
For tasks where speed and efficiency are key, Gemini 2.5 Flash is Google’s go-to. The latest update makes Flash even better across the board – improving its reasoning, multimodality (understanding different types of info), coding, and ability to handle long contexts. Impressively, it’s also become 20-30% more efficient in Google’s evaluations, meaning it uses fewer resources.
The new, improved 2.5 Flash is already available for preview in the Gemini app (for everyone), Google AI Studio for developers, and Vertex AI for enterprise users, with general availability for production use slated for early June. Gemini 2.5 Pro will follow soon after in AI Studio and Vertex AI.
Exciting new capabilities for the entire Gemini 2.5 family
Beyond individual model improvements, Google is rolling out some cool new functionalities that will benefit experiences built on Gemini 2.5:
- More Natural Conversations with Native Audio Output: This is a big one for making interactions feel more human.
- The Live API (which allows for real-time, streaming interactions) is getting a preview of audio-visual input and native audio output. This means developers can build experiences where Gemini not only understands your voice and sees what you’re seeing but also responds with its own expressive, natural-sounding voice. You can even tell it to adopt a specific tone or accent!
- Early features for this include “Affective Dialogue” (Gemini detects emotion in your voice and responds appropriately) and “Proactive Audio” (it can ignore background noise and knows when it’s its turn to speak).
- New Text-to-Speech (TTS) capabilities are also coming to both 2.5 Pro and Flash, with first-of-its-kind support for multiple speakers (two distinct voices from a single text input) and the ability to capture subtle nuances like whispers, across over 24 languages. This TTS update is expected in the Gemini API later today (May 20th).
- Getting Things Done with “Computer Use” (Project Mariner): The underlying tech (Project Mariner) for computer use is being brought into the Gemini API and Vertex AI. This means developers will be able to build AI applications that can perform tasks on a computer on your behalf, with a broader roll-out for experimentation coming this summer.
- Enhanced Security: Google has significantly beefed up protections against security threats like indirect prompt injections (where malicious instructions are hidden in data the AI retrieves), making Gemini 2.5 their most secure model family yet.
Better tools for developers, better Apps for users
Google is also improving the developer experience with things like “Thought Summaries” (making it easier to see how the AI “thinks”), extending “Thinking Budgets” to 2.5 Pro (giving more control over processing costs and response times), and better support for open-source tools. While developer-focused, these improvements ultimately lead to more robust, reliable, and innovative AI applications for all of us.
Google is clearly pushing the pedal to the metal on Gemini development. These updates to the 2.5 Pro and Flash models are a move towards AI that is not only incredibly intelligent but also more natural to interact with, more helpful in completing real-world tasks, and more secure. As these enhanced models and capabilities make their way into the Google products we use every day (like Search, the Gemini app, and Workspace tools), we can expect our AI interactions to become even more powerful and intuitive.
