Google is bringing one of the most impressive features of its NotebookLM AI research tool directly into the Workspace ecosystem. A new update for Google Docs introduces Gemini-powered audio summaries, allowing users to listen to a brief, verbal overview of their documents rather than reading through pages of text. This feature is designed to help professionals and students quickly digest the core points of a report, meeting notes, or research paper while on the go.
The core of this update is the ability for Gemini to analyze a document (including those with multiple tabs) and generate a short synopsis that usually lasts only a few minutes. Unlike the robotic text-to-speech tools of the past, these summaries utilize a natural speaking style, making the information easier to retain and more pleasant to consume. It is a significant step toward making Google Docs a more versatile tool for multitasking.

Personalized voices and playback control
What makes this feature particularly interesting is the level of customization Google has included. Users aren’t stuck with a single default narrator; instead, you can choose from various vocal personas such as “Narrator,” “Persuader,” or “Coach.” This allows you to tailor the delivery of the summary to the context of the document. For instance, a “Coach” persona might be more effective for reviewing a training guide, while a “Persuader” could help you hear how a pitch deck or proposal sounds to an outside listener.
Beyond the vocal tone, the interface includes adjustable playback speeds. This is a crucial addition for those who prefer to “speed-read” their audio at 1.5x or 2x speeds to maximize efficiency. By moving these summaries into the audio space, Google is effectively turning your document library into a private podcast feed of your own data and research.
Access and rollout details
Accessing the new feature is straightforward. Once it has rolled out to your account, you can find the “Listen to document summary” option located directly within the Tools menu. This eliminates the need to export text to a secondary AI tool, keeping the entire workflow contained within the Google Docs environment.
The availability for this feature is broad but focused on the premium tiers of Google’s AI and Workspace offerings. It is currently rolling out to Google Workspace Business (Standard and Plus), Enterprise (Standard and Plus), and Education subscribers. Additionally, it is available to individual users with Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscriptions.
The rollout began on February 12, 2026, though Google notes this is an extended rollout, meaning it could take longer than the typical 15 days to reach every eligible user. As Google continues to weave Gemini deeper into the fabric of its productivity suite, features like this prove that the goal isn’t just to generate text, but to change how we interact with and consume information across the entire Google ecosystem.
