When Google first introduced Gemini in Chrome, it was a fairly limited affair. It was restricted to the US, required the browser language to be set to English, and was only available on certain desktop platforms. But with the rollout of Chrome 145, Google is starting in on their promised global expansion.
According to the latest release notes, Gemini in Chrome is now gradually rolling out to users in Canada, New Zealand, and India. But the bigger news is the sheer volume of languages now supported.
A truly multilingual AI assistant
According to the support page, with Chrome 145, Google is adding support for dozens of languages, ensuring that users in these new regions (US included) can interact with Gemini in their native tongue. The list of newly supported languages is extensive, including:
- European languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, and Nordic languages like Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian.
- Asian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese (Simplified & Traditional).
- And many more: From Afrikaans and Swahili to Icelandic and Welsh.
Crucially, the release notes clarify that the US rollout will also support these same languages. If you are in the States and prefer to browse in Spanish or Hindi, Gemini in Chrome will finally be able to understand and assist you without forcing a language switch in your settings.
Multi-tab context and Google Drive
While the geographic expansion is the headline, Chrome 145 also brings some functional upgrades to the Gemini side panel. The “multi-tab context” feature is now rolling out, allowing Gemini to see up to 10 of your open tabs. This makes it much easier to ask the AI to “compare the specs of the laptops in my open tabs” or “summarize the different perspectives from these news articles.”
Looking slightly ahead to Chrome 146, the notes also mention that Google Drive files will become available as context. This means you’ll eventually be able to pull information directly from your Docs or PDFs in Drive to help inform your browsing or answer questions in the sidebar.
How to get it
The rollout is happening gradually across ChromeOS, macOS, and Windows. If you are in one of the new regions, you can check for the update by heading to Settings > About Chrome. Once you’re on version 145, look for the Gemini icon in your toolbar or the “AI Innovations” section in your settings to toggle it on.
