For anyone who has ever wrestled with creating documents containing complex mathematical equations, intricate tables, or precise multi-column layouts, the LaTeX document preparation system is likely a familiar (and sometimes frustrating) friend. It’s the standard for high-quality academic, scientific, and technical documents, but it traditionally requires specialized editors and significant technical know-how.

In a fantastic new update, Google is dramatically lowering the barrier to entry by introducing improved LaTeX rendering and PDF export capabilities directly within the Gemini app. This makes it significantly easier for everyone to create professional, complex documents without needing deep LaTeX expertise.

What’s new for LaTeX in Gemini?

This update brings several powerful new features:

  1. PDF Generation: You can now ask Gemini to generate a PDF document using LaTeX. Gemini will render a preview directly in the chat interface, and you can then download the finished PDF, ready for sharing or printing. This eliminates the need for a separate LaTeX compiler or editor for basic document creation.
  2. Easy Editing in Canvas: Working with LaTeX within Gemini’s Canvas documents is now much simpler. A new fx button allows you to add LaTeX code, and you can edit existing LaTeX formulas just by clicking directly on them within the Canvas.
  3. Improved Copying: When you copy LaTeX content from a Gemini response, it will now copy the raw, unrendered LaTeX code. This makes it easy to paste the code into dedicated LaTeX editors or other documents.

A powerful tool for complex documents

These updates transform Gemini into a far more powerful tool for students, researchers, engineers, and anyone who needs to create polished documents with complex formatting. Whether you’re working on academic papers, problem sets, technical reports, or even just a resume with precise layout needs, Gemini can now assist you more effectively.

The new LaTeX features, including PDF generation and Canvas editing, are available now for a wide range of users, including most Google Workspace tiers (Business, Enterprise, Education, Nonprofits), Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and those with Gemini Business/Enterprise add-ons. PDF export is available on the web, with read-only viewing in the mobile apps.
