Gemini conversation history is finally coming to the Google Workspace side panel

If you’ve been using Gemini in Workspace for things like summarizing a long document or asking questions about a file in Drive, you know the frustration of losing your progress. Up until now, those side panel chats were temporary; once the session ended, so did the conversation.

According to a new Google Workspace update, that’s about to change. Google is rolling out the ability to resume your Gemini conversations across sessions, meaning you can pick up exactly where you left off.

How it works

There are a few important nuances to how this history is stored:

  • App-specific history: Your conversations are siloed by the app you’re in. For example, a chat you start in the Google Docs side panel won’t show up when you open Gemini in Google Sheets. This keeps your context relevant to the task at hand.
  • Private by design: Even if you are working in a shared file, your Gemini sidebar conversations remain private to you. Other users with access to that same file won’t be able to see your chat history.
  • Manual and auto-deletion: Admins will have the ability to control whether users can manually delete their history or set auto-deletion periods (ranging from three months to three years).

Why this matters

This update effectively turns the Gemini side panel from a quick “one-off” tool into a persistent creative partner. If you’re working on a multi-day project in a Google Doc and have been using Gemini to help refine your writing, you no longer have to worry about re-prompting the AI every time you open the file. It keeps the momentum going without the “starting from scratch” tax we’ve all been paying.

Availability and rollout

The rollout schedule is a bit staggered, so here is when you should keep an eye out for it:

  • Admin controls: These are available now for all domains.
  • Gemini Alpha and Workspace Labs: End users in these programs will start seeing history on March 3, 2026.
  • General Workspace users: Rollout for the rest of us will begin no sooner than March 17, 2026.

This will be available for:

  • Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
  • Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
  • Education Plus and Teaching & Learning
  • Frontline Plus
  • Consumer Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers

It’s another small but significant step in making Gemini feel like a native, integrated part of the Workspace experience rather than just a bolt-on feature.
