Google’s promise at MWC regarding Project Astra’s integration with Gemini Live is starting to materialize; it’s just in what looks to be a staggered roll-out. 9to5 Google reports seeing the initial signs of camera and screen sharing functionality making its way to Android users, which is a major step forward for real-time AI interaction.
One Reddit user has reported activating the Gemini overlay and discovering a new “Share screen with Live” button. This feature, positioned above the familiar “Ask about screen” suggestion chip and the Ask Gemini field, allows for full screen sharing. It’s worth noting that for now, you share your entire screen, not just a singled-out app.
Simultaneously, this user has also gained access to the real-time camera capabilities. By opening the full Gemini Live interface and initiating a video stream, a button in the bottom-right corner enables switching to the front-facing camera, facilitating direct interaction with the surrounding environment. It is, in fact, giving Gemini eyes to see the world.
It’s clear that Google is strategically pacing this roll-out, a smart approach given the complexity of these features. As of today, my own device hasn’t taken these updates, but you can bet I’m on the lookout for them
It’s worth recalling Google’s January statement, which indicated that Pixel and potentially the Galaxy S25 series owners would be prioritized in receiving Project Astra features like screen sharing and live video streaming. As of now, however, there doesn’t appear to be any inherent technical limitation that would necessitate restricting Astra to specific devices.
For now, this looks like an Android-only affair, but as this roll-out progresses, we’ll continue to monitor and report on the availability and performance of these new Gemini Live capabilities. The integration of Project Astra promises to significantly enhance real-time AI interaction, and I’m very excited to see how it evolves.
