I’m starting to sound like a broken record here, but I honestly don’t know what else to say. Every time I think the ‘Skywalker’ baseboard is finished adding new devices, I check the Chromium Gerrit and find another one. We thought 8 was a lot. We were shocked at 10. We just recently wrote about ‘Finley’ making it 11. And today, the count hits a dozen.

A new board codenamed ‘Dooku’ has just surfaced in the repositories, officially becoming the 12th unique Chromebook in development on this MediaTek Kompanio 540 platform. Named after the iconic Star Wars Sith Lord Count Dooku, this device joins the absolute army of Chromebooks preparing to launch on this new chipset.

The wild scale of ‘Skywalker’

Just to put this in perspective, seeing three or four devices spawned from a single baseboard is usually considered a success. Seeing twelve is just wild and pretty unusual. Here is the updated roll call for the ‘Skywalker’ class:

  • Obiwan
  • Luuke
  • Yoda
  • Anakin
  • Quigon
  • Baze
  • Tarkin
  • Phasma
  • Grogu
  • Starros
  • Finley
  • Dooku (New)

What to expect from ‘Dooku’

Like its eleven siblings, ‘Dooku’ will be powered by the chip we’ve been tracking as the MT8189, which MediaTek recently confirmed is the Kompanio 540.

As we discussed when the chip was officially announced, this silicon is tailor-made for the education market. It features powerful Cortex-A78 cores (a nice upgrade for this segment), supports fast storage, and is designed for fanless, rugged, battery-sipping capabilities.

With the Kompanio 540 release window set for January 2026, the timing here is perfect. We are likely looking at a massive wave of these devices hitting the market just in time for the big education conferences (like BETT and FETC) early next year. Manufacturers are clearly betting big on this chip to dominate the classroom, and with 12 different models now in the works, schools are going to have a lot of options to choose from.

Will ‘Dooku’ be the final addition? At this point, I’ve learned my lesson: I’m not betting against more Star Wars characters showing up anytime soon.
