Google looks to be pushing forward in the high-quality streaming department. A recent update to the Chromecast Ultra has added a video smoothness feature to deliver the best quality video based on your hardware.
The next step in the evolution has now occurred with the addition of HDR (high dynamic range) content to Google Play Movies & TV. A number of HDR movies and television shows have already been added to the catalogs in the Google Play Store.
High dynamic range or HDR is an imaging technique that creates a wider range of “luminosity”. Essentially, this creates a greater range of light conditions and in turn a broader range of colors.
The Catch?
At least for now, the HDR content is only available when using the 4K Chromecast Ultra. While UHD content is available in the Play Store for Chromecast and some Android TV devices, HDR is exclusive to the Ultra.
The news is no surprise as the folks over at Android Police discovered the preparation for HDR in the teardown of the Play Movies APK back in April.
No announcement has been made by Google as to whether or not they plan to expand HDR availability. So, if it’s HDR you want, $70 you will have to part with for the Ultra.
