If you are anything like me, your mobile browser is a chaotic graveyard of open tabs. Amidst the clutter of random Google searches and half-read articles, there are usually one or two tabs you actually need to keep open with the rest being questionable at best. Until now, those crucial tabs were easily lost in the shuffle or, worse, accidentally swiped away.
Thankfully, Google is finally bringing a beloved desktop feature to mobile to fix this. Chrome on Android is rolling out a “Pin tab” option, allowing you to lock your most important pages in place.
How it works
This feature works almost exactly like it does on your computer, but adapted for the mobile interface.
- To Pin: Open your tab overview (the grid view), long-press on the tab you want to save, and select “Pin tab” from the menu.
- The Result: Pinned tabs are moved to the very top of your tab grid. Crucially, they effectively lose the “X” close button, preventing you from accidentally closing them while clearing out clutter.
- To Unpin: You simply long-press the tab again and select “Unpin tab” when you’re done with it.
How to get it right now
This feature has been spotted in the Beta and Canary versions of Chrome for a little while, but it is now starting to appear for more users. If you don’t see it yet on your device, don’t worry—you can force it to show up right now with a simple flag:
- Open Chrome on Android and type
chrome://flagsin the address bar. - Search for “Android Pinned Tabs”.
- Change the setting from “Default” to “Enabled”.
- Relaunch Chrome.
This is a small but mighty update that makes mobile browsing feel much more stable and predictable. It’s a great tool for building a “starter workspace” on your phone, keeping your daily essentials ready to go without the fear of accidentally losing them.
