On the desktop version of Chrome, the bookmarks bar is a staple of simple convenience. However, that convenience has historically been missing from the mobile experience. That distinction is no longer going to be a thing moving forward as Google has quietly begun rolling out a dedicated bookmarks bar for Chrome on Android.
Further closing the gap between desktop and mobile
Until now, accessing your favorite sites on Android required a multi-step process: tapping the three-dot menu and navigating to the “Bookmarks” section. This new update introduces a toggle in the settings that allows the bookmarks bar to appear directly below the omnibox, mirroring the classic desktop layout.
There is one significant catch, though: this feature isn’t for everyone just yet. Currently, the bookmarks bar toggle is only appearing for users on wide-screen devices, such as tablets. While it makes perfect sense to utilize the extra screen real estate on a tablet, it remains to be seen if Google will eventually find a way to scale this down for standard smartphone displays.
For the time being, it’s just another small change to the Android version of Chrome that continues to close down the gap between the desktop version of our favorite web browser and the one we get on mobile. There’s still a long way to go and many more features that need duplicating, but this one sure does make the mobile browser feel a lot more grown up.
