As we barrel toward Black Friday, the hunt for affordable, high-quality tech gifts is officially on. Usually, when you see a laptop priced under $250, you run the other way, expecting a dim screen, a creaky chassis, and a not-so-great user experience. But every once in a while, a deal comes along that completely flips the script. Right now, Best Buy is selling the Lenovo Chromebook Slim 3 for just $218—a massive $181 discount—and frankly, for this price, it’s almost too good to pass up.
Why this device is a hidden gem
When we reviewed the Slim 3 back in 2023, it quickly became one of our favorite budget surprises of the year. Lenovo managed to pull off something special here, honestly. Despite the budget price tag, the build quality feels rigid and solid, with smooth lines and a comfortable keyboard that punches well above its weight class.
But the real star of the show—and the reason this deal is so “ridiculous”—is the screen. You are getting a 14-inch, 1080p IPS touchscreen that delivers up to 300 nits of brightness. This is not just something we normally see in the budget segment. Most devices in this price bracket stick you with dim, washed-out TN panels. The Slim 3’s display is punchy, vibrant, and a genuine pleasure to look at. There is a non-touch version too that’s currently on sale for $149, but it only has 250 nits of brightness.
It’s also worth noting that this isn’t a device that will be obsolete in a year or two. The Lenovo Slim 3 will continue to get automatic software and security updates from Google until June 2033. Getting a laptop for $149 that is guaranteed to stay secure and up-to-date for nearly another decade is pretty incredible, adding even value to this package.
Managing expectations
Now, at $218, you need to understand that this isn’t a workhorse. Inside, it’s powered by the MediaTek Kompanio 520 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. It’s not going to win any speed races, and if you try to open 50 tabs while editing photos, it will slow down.
However, for what this device is meant for—browsing the web, watching YouTube, managing email, or schoolwork—it is a perfectly competent machine. Plus, that MediaTek chip is incredibly efficient, easily delivering the 13 hours of battery life that Lenovo claims.
The perfect holiday gift?
So, if you are looking for a first laptop for a student, a device for the family, or just a solid, reliable computer for someone who needs the basics without the bulk, this is it. At its regular price of $399, the Slim 3 is a decent buy. At $218, it is an absolute steal and easily one of the best tech gifts you can grab this season. This markdown isn’t labeled as a Black Friday deal, so I’m not sure how long it will last. If you’re looking for an affordable Chromebook this holiday season, I recommend snagging this deal while you can!
