Update resumed: the ChromeOS 139 update is rolling out once again

Earlier this week, we reported that Google had hit the emergency brake on the ChromeOS 139 update, pulling the new version for all devices after its initial roll-out had already begun. As we speculated at the time, this drastic move was almost certainly due to the discovery of a critical bug that needed to be squashed.

Well, it looks like the team at Google has been hard at work, because a fixed, incremental update is now officially rolling out. As of this morning, the update trackers are showing that all devices are back on the path to M139 – specifically M139.0.7258.164.

I have to give props to the ChromeOS team for its diligence in resolving this one so quickly. A turnaround of just a few days for what was likely a serious bug is impressive and shows that while they had to pause the roll-out, getting a stable build out to users remained a top priority.

Since the original rollout was so short-lived, here’s a quick reminder of the two very useful, practical features you can expect when the update lands on your device:

• Desk Sync: This new feature helps you quickly pick up right where you left off when you switch between Chromebooks by restoring all of your windows, tabs, and even your cookies from your previous session.
• External Touchscreen Calibration: In a much-needed addition, ChromeOS 139 includes a new tool in the display settings to properly calibrate the boundaries of an external touch display, fixing a long-standing pain point for many users.
