In a landscape dominated by convertibles and clamshells, the HP Chromebook x2 arrives on the scene with a bold, distinctive and important claim: the world's first detachable Chromebook.
It is a neat trick to be sure, but without the proper performance, build quality and user experience to go along with it, a separating form factor becomes just that: a parlor trick. Can the HP Chromebook x2 live up to the hype of being the first of its kind?
Let's take a look.

Regardless of who makes it or what category it falls in
0:27
every device has to have a first when we talk about device evolution. We had to have a first
0:32
phone. We had to have a first tablet. And for Chromebooks, we had to have a first detachable
0:38
device. And this, the Chromebook X2 by HP, is that first device. And to be the first device
0:44
to do this, HP has done a lot of stuff right. So let's talk about the build quality. Overall
0:49
HP has just knocked it out of the park here. The thing looks great on the table. It looks great at
0:53
a coffee shop. It feels great in hand. It's solid. There's lots of aluminum and glass. And even though
0:58
the keyboard isn't really leather, it looks like leather and it kind of feels nice into your hands
1:02
Just the whole package just really goes together well. That's not to say it's perfect. So there are
1:08
a couple of little issues. The screen is a little bit wobbly when it's in your lap. Now, when it's
1:12
on a desk, the way that the hinge opens and it kind of has a little foot, it stabilizes itself
1:16
pretty well. That being said, whenever you detach this thing and use it as a tablet, it really feels
1:21
like a tablet. And that's one thing I've just grown to love about this device is that a lot of
1:26
detachables, sometimes when you detach them, they feel like a laptop that's missing a keyboard
1:30
And this doesn't. It really feels just as tablet-like as the Acer Chromebook tab, which is
1:36
literally just a tablet. It really has just that kind of tablet feel. The bezels are nice and
1:41
symmetrical all around. You get that left and right stereo separation. It just feels really good to
1:46
use in that mode. And I found myself using it way more in tablet mode than I ever do my Pixelbook
1:50
that being said, we also have to flip back and say because of that wobbliness and there's kind
1:55
of the weird part where it lifts the keyboard up as it hinges open. In your lap and on the couch
2:01
it's passable as a laptop, but you're definitely going to notice that you're using it attachable
2:05
here. So if you find yourself using your computer like that all the time, that's probably going to
2:09
be a little bit of a knock for you. For me, the majority of the time I'm sitting at a desk. And so
2:13
when it's sitting on a desk, it's very solid, it's very stable. I don't even really notice that it
2:17
doesn't have a great laptop feel. Let's talk real quick about the screen. There's not a lot to say
2:22
here, mainly because this is the same panel that you see in the Pixelbook and in the Samsung
2:27
Chromebook Plus and the Samsung Chromebook Pro. Literally the exact same panel. So we got a 2400
2:32
by 1600 display, 400 inch of brightness. It looks great. It performs great. It's just as good as
2:38
those displays, and I've raved about those displays. So I love having it on here. Any device that uses
2:43
this display is great in my book. What it does even better than the Pixelbook version
2:49
is it actually reduces the bezel A lot of people don like the bezels on the Pixelbook They a little bit big This one bezels are actually in control and they managed to squeeze the speakers in on the left and right side
2:59
So overall, there's not a whole lot more to say about this thing. It's a great screen
3:03
We've seen it before. It's performing well on this device too. Moving on to input methods
3:07
this thing has a great keyboard, a great trackpad, and a great stylus. As I said at the top of the video
3:12
HP did a lot of stuff right with this one. So let's talk about the keyboard first
3:17
The travel is really, really good. the keys are nicely spaced. You get a full-size keyboard, so there's no issue there whatsoever
3:23
But overall, I mean, it's really solid, and the feel of typing on this thing is really
3:28
really great. Now, early on, we thought this device was going to have backlighting, and
3:32
ultimately, HP's own website said it was going to, but then they've come back and said they don't
3:37
think it's going to, and so I think they're a little confused on whether or not they're actually going to produce one with backlighting. We still might see one, but for right now, the one that
3:44
you're going to get, the one you're going to buy from HP or Best Buy, will not have a backlit
3:48
keyboard. So because we were expecting it, it's kind of a bummer. But for me, I don't use back
3:53
lighting on my keyboard that often. So it's not that big of a deal. But if back lighting is your
3:57
thing, this one doesn't have it yet. Talking about the trackpad, it's huge. It's really
4:03
smooth and nice to use. All your gestures work exactly like you'd expect. It's not glass
4:09
but it performs just about as good as a glass trackpad. The click is really nice. And for me
4:14
that's a really important thing. If you've watched videos, you know, I really get on devices that have
4:18
crappy click mechanisms. And this one is not one of those. It clicks really well. And again
4:22
using this device, instead of feeling like, well, this is good for a detachable, this is just a good keyboard and trackpad deck, regardless of what device it's on. So I've just
4:31
been really, really impressed with the input methods here. And then if we start talking about
4:35
the stylus, it's an AES stylus. So there's a little battery in it. And so it's going to perform similar to the one on the Pixelbook. And for a lot of artists, they like EMR stylus
4:44
this is an AES version. For me, I just jot notes and that kind of stuff. I'm not an artist, and so
4:50
it does really well. The pen is always with you. It's kind of out of the way when it's in laptop
4:56
mode. It doesn't bother me, but unlike the pen loop on the Pixelbook, the Pixelbook is a convertible
5:01
so it would fold around, and the pen would still be there when you had it in tablet mode, and it really, really bugged me enough that I took it off. This one, when you go into tablet mode, you're
5:09
usually going to detach the device, so you leave the pen with the keyboard, and so that actually
5:13
makes for a really good place to put the pin. Now, being that this is a detachable and a lot of times
5:18
going to be used as a tablet, HP has gone the pretty normal route here of newer Chromebooks
5:23
and just using the two USB-Cs on each side of the device. And what they've done that's, again
5:28
thoughtful here when this thing is in laptop mode is they've put the USB-Cs on the lower end of the
5:34
device. So if you have a dongle connected for your monitor and charging and all that stuff like I do
5:39
on a daily basis, it's not plugged into the top of the display and hanging down
5:43
It right near the bottom near the keyboard And so I sure an engineer somebody thought through that because they put both of them on the same side on the bottom of the device And so again HP has done a good job of thinking through how this thing is going to be used on a daily basis
5:55
The speakers on this device are a mixed bag. So they are just like any other laptop speaker where they don't really have any bass response to speak of
6:06
But they do get really, really good stereo separation. So they're on both sides of the screen and far enough apart that if you watch something where a plane flies by on your left side or something, you really hear it move by this side
6:18
For content consumption, watching a video or watching a movie with this thing, hearing the stereo separation is going to be a little better than most devices
6:27
One thing we need to talk about on this particular device that we don't talk much about with Chromebooks, and it seems like moving forward we're probably going to start talking more and more about, is the cameras
6:37
So this device equips a 5 megapixel front-facing shooter and then a 13 megapixel rear-facing shooter
6:44
And for right now, this moment, like if you went and bought this device today, you're not really going to see much improvement
6:52
However, we have seen recent code commits, and who knows, by the time you watch this video, it's probably already a thing
6:59
The Google camera is coming to Chrome OS, and it's starting to show up here and there on different devices right now on developer channel
7:04
eventually it'll be on stable channel for lots of devices, pretty much any device that has Android
7:09
apps. And so it won't be something you need to install. It will be a system level app. It will
7:14
be on your device. And I can tell you from using it on the Pixelbook, even in its infancy, that
7:18
software helps the camera performance a hundred times. When we get down to the internals of this
7:24
device, we're working with a Core M3 7Y30 and 32 gigs of internal storage, four gigs of RAM. And
7:32
a lot of you think 32 gigs of internal storage is a little bit too small. There is an SD card
7:36
slot on this one, so you can expand that storage out. Four gigs of RAM for some people, again
7:41
is kind of a knock, but I haven't really noticed any issue with this device. Daily, I work with a
7:47
Pixelbook with eight gigs of RAM, and so I kind of expected I would run into some sort of hiccup
7:52
here or there. Didn't really see any issue. So with Octane, it comes in just a couple thousand
7:57
shy of the Pixelbook. So I've got the i5, last generation i5 Pixelbook with eight gigs of RAM
8:05
It comes in around 26 and a half, 27,000 on Octane. This one comes in at about 25,000 and
8:11
some change. So it's not much slower on Octane. And this thing gets a 129 on speedometer. So for
8:17
those of you who aren't used to speedometer scores, the scale on speedometer tops out at 140
8:23
and that's got 129. For reference, the Pixelbook I was just talking about gets a 126, so it actually
8:29
is faster with speedometer. So that really is just kind of measuring how fast it can run JavaScript
8:34
stuff and run basic web performance type thing I didn feel like I had downgraded from my Pixelbook to this device It just I kind of got on with my work just like I normally would The battery in it is solid It exactly what you expect These newer chips keep handling battery better and better
8:49
I was seeing anywhere between 7 to 10 hours of mixed use, just depending on your screen brightness
8:54
And again, this thing gets really bright. So if you're not careful and you kind of forget
8:57
and crank your screen brightness up for any particular setting and forget to go back down
9:02
you're going to get down to that 6 and 7 hour range if you're cranking this 400-minute screen all the way up
9:06
But as long as you keep it down in the 60% to 70% range, that's good enough for basically any room that you're ever going to be in
9:13
You're going to get closer to 10 hours from this device. And honestly, from any device that's this large, that's a really great usage time
9:20
So overall, you haven't heard a lot of negative things here. I've been pretty positive in this review, and there's a reason for that
9:27
This is a really, really good device. I've really enjoyed using it. There's not been a whole lot of fall-off coming from a Pixelbook and going to this device
9:34
It's just been really natural to use and I've just enjoyed it a lot
9:39
It does a lot of things well and it checks a lot of boxes. And I think as the Android ecosystem continues to develop and really mature on Chrome OS
9:47
I'm probably going to find myself wanting a device more like this than a convertible
9:51
We haven't even talked about the price yet. This thing can come in anywhere from as low as $520, which we saw it on HP's website not too long ago
9:59
And it can go up to $650, which is where it's at on Best Buy's website right now
10:04
they're the only retailer that has it. But anywhere inside of that range from $520 to $650
10:11
this thing is a steal. It is a fantastic device. It's built well. It feels good. It looks good
10:16
It does things that no other Chromebook can do right now. It comes with the pen. It comes with
10:20
the keyboard. It really just kind of checks so many boxes. And then the nags that I have against
10:25
it, the things that I say, eh, this isn't so great, are really just not that big of a deal in general
10:30
So, I mean, if you're even on the fence whatsoever with this device, I can't tell you enough
10:35
Go get it. Go buy one. You will like it. You will enjoy it. Oh, by the way, when Linux apps come out, this will be one of the first devices to get it
10:43
They mentioned it at I.O. right alongside the Pixelbook. So this thing is going to get Linux apps right away as soon as they can come out
10:48
So sometime in September of 2018, October, somewhere in that time frame, when they start rolling out
10:54
you'll also have access to all the Linux apps you want and all of that set up too
10:58
So there's really no downside here for the price, for what it does, for the way it looks
11:04
Highly recommended. And so I hope we've helped you make a purchasing decision here
