We recently purchased the new 2020 Mac Mini with the M1 processor and decided to put it to the test to see if this ARM processor is really that good!

0:03
this is the new mac mini from apple
0:05
running the m1 chip
0:07
and i know i know this is not a
0:08
chromebook and you all come to our
0:10
channel
0:10
to watch videos about chromebooks but
0:12
hear me out this computer and
0:14
m1 chip inside is an important device
0:16
because it shows us
0:17
what an arm processor is truly capable
0:19
of so
0:20
let's dive into a couple of the details
0:22
about this mac mini and why i think
0:24
everyone should be excited about the
0:26
future of arm processors
0:31
today's video is brought to you by our
0:33
thriving and awesome patreon community
0:34
where we offer things like behind the
0:36
scenes footage

0:50
forward slash chrome unboxed so we
0:52
bought this mac mini a couple of weeks
0:54
ago because we were in the process of
0:56
shopping around for a new editing
0:57
machine
0:58
to replace our 2016 macbook pro because
1:01
it was just
1:01
getting really sluggish but then we saw
1:04
apple's keynote where they confirmed the
1:06
new line of macs were indeed going to be
1:08
running an arm-based
1:10
system on a chip and so at that point
1:13
i was sold and part of the reason i was
1:14
sold was because of the price
1:16
this mac mini cost us about thirteen
1:18
hundred dollars which
1:19
is a lot cheaper than the other option
1:21
that we were considering which was a
1:24
mac pro trash can style and we were
1:27
going to end up spending probably around
1:28
three thousand dollars to get that
1:30
desktop
1:30
and then the reviews started coming in
1:32
and we were blown away at how good these
1:35
chips appeared to be
1:36
based on those early benchmarks so we
1:38
decided to make the move
1:39
partially because we needed a new
1:40
editing machine and it looked like
1:43
final cut was going to run really well
1:45
on this machine
1:46
but also so that we could test an arm
1:49
processor that was claiming this type of
1:50
performance
1:51
all right so let's take a step back here
1:52
for a second what exactly is arm
1:55
arm is basically the company that
1:56
creates and designs the processor
1:58
architecture
1:59
and then sells licensing to other
2:01
manufacturers like
2:02
qualcomm and samsung it's pretty likely
2:05
that the smartphone that you have or the
2:07
tablet that you use
2:08
is powered by some sort of arm chip and
2:11
we've seen chromebooks with arm chips
2:13
like the
2:13
lenovo chromebook duet but robbie has a
2:16
whole separate video on
2:17
arm chips so we'll link that one below
2:19
but this mac mini and the other laptops
2:21
that apple announced
2:22
are the first arm chips that are getting
2:24
this sort of performance and it's mainly
2:25
because apple has a full licensing
2:27
agreement with arm so that they could
2:29
really build this chip
2:31
exactly the way that they wanted and
2:33
they weren't using some sort of like
2:35
off-the-shelf processor from arm like
2:38
other manufacturers do
2:39
so really from the ground up this chip
2:41
was built to run
2:43
the latest version of apple's operating
2:45
system and it works extremely well
2:47
especially with apple software like
2:49
final cut and it's because of all of
2:51
this
2:51
that we were so excited about this
2:53
device so all right
2:55
that's why we bought the mac mini now
2:58
let's talk for a second about the specs
3:00
we purchased the mac mini with 16 gigs
3:02
of ram and one terabyte of internal
3:05
storage
3:05
everything is integrated on this chip
3:07
what they call a system on a chip or an
3:09
soc
3:10
so we decided to get the most ram
3:12
available since we knew that we weren't
3:14
going to be able to upgrade any of the
3:15
internals in the future has
3:17
good connectivity it looks really nice
3:19
on the desk it's small
3:20
it's out of the way and it has kind of
3:22
that typical apple design aesthetic
3:24
that you would come to expect with an
3:26
apple product but this isn't a review
3:27
and
3:28
you can find all sorts of great reviews
3:30
out there so let's get down to the real
3:32
world test that we ran to determine
3:33
whether we were going to keep this
3:34
device
3:35
or have to go buy some sort of intel
3:37
based editing station so here's what i
3:39
did
3:39
i took the exact same project that had
3:42
some graphics
3:43
multiple clips some color grading and
3:45
was about seven minutes long
3:46
and i copied that over to the new mac
3:48
mini from the macbook pro
3:50
and then started the export at the exact
3:52
same time i made sure the macbook was
3:54
connected to power
3:55
and both machines didn't have any other
3:57
applications open during
3:59
this experiment and i could tell
4:02
right off the start that the m1 was
4:05
gonna
4:05
probably do a pretty good job because at
4:07
one minute it was already at
4:09
twenty percent of the export and the
4:12
macbook was at about
4:13
two percent the macbook did catch up a
4:15
little bit about five minutes in when
4:16
the macbook was about
4:18
35 and the mac mini was around 63
4:22
and then the mac mini got to about 10
4:24
minutes and it was already at 84
4:27
and i looked over and the macbook is at
4:29
59
4:30
and then boom at 1008 the mac mini
4:33
finished the export and then i waited
4:35
and i waited and then the timer hit
4:37
20 minutes and we were at 83 on the
4:39
macbook 22 minutes
4:41
86 25 minutes about 88 and then finally
4:45
at 2506 the macbook finished the export
4:48
so yeah the m1 mac was about two and a
4:52
half
4:52
times faster than the macbook pro at
4:54
exporting the exact same
4:56
project the file in the end was the
4:58
exact same size and i had the exact same
5:00
export settings
5:01
so i was pretty much blown away at this
5:03
point but
5:04
why does all of this matter and why am i
5:06
telling you about this here on the
5:07
chrome unbox channel
5:09
well this experiment is a testament to
5:11
what arm is capable of when it is built
5:13
from the ground
5:14
up the way that this m1 chip has been
5:17
built
5:17
and you can go look at other people who
5:20
are talking about these chips and how
5:21
impressed they are and
5:22
i would say most reviewers are getting
5:24
similar results to what i
5:26
experienced so the question is what what
5:28
would it look like if google decided to
5:30
make their own silicon there's been some
5:31
rumors we've heard murmuring
5:33
that maybe this is happening but what if
5:36
what if google decided to make an arm
5:38
chip that was built from the ground up
5:41
for chrome os a processor built
5:43
specifically for chromebooks
5:45
what would that look like i think it'd
5:47
be pretty awesome
5:48
and this mac mini has me pretty excited
5:50
about that possibility
5:52
but that's it for this one before you
5:53
head out make sure to go down there
