If you use Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) for deep-dive research, lecture notes, or project planning, you know the single biggest irritation has always been the wall separating it from your daily chat flow. Notebooks were fantastic for grounding answers strictly in your uploaded PDFs and Docs, but whenever you needed to pull context from one into a regular conversation, you were stuck tab-hopping and copying text back and forth.
That workflow friction is finally gone. According to an official Google Workspace announcement, Google has officially rolled out a native Gemini Notebook Connected App inside the standard Gemini app interface. You can now manage, create, and interrogate your custom research libraries using direct @Gemini Notebook mentions without ever leaving your current prompt stream.
Querying and building your research directly from chat
The implementation here works just like the Workspace extensions we already rely on for Gmail, Drive, and Docs. By invoking @Gemini Notebook in your prompt box, the Gemini app gains full conversational visibility into your existing notebook library and their specific source documents. Here is what you can ask it to do right now from the prompt line:
- Create and organize notebooks: You can prompt Gemini to spin up a notebook from scratch on the fly (e.g., “Create a Gemini Notebook about commercial solar farm permitting”).
- Add new source material: Pipe in links, files, or reference points directly into an existing notebook without switching workspaces.
- Inspect notebook contents: Ask for an audit of your research material, such as “Show me a list of all the sources in my notebook about national parks”.
- Contextual Q&A: Query your notebooks directly from a general chat window to pull specific citations and synthesized answers based strictly on your compiled research.
Clearly, this dramatically cuts down friction for the overall user experience. Instead of treating your notebooks as isolated reference silos, they behave like tailored knowledge bases you can summon at will while drafting articles, prepping scripts, or outlining projects.
Availability and rollout details
The integration is available immediately across both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. It is accessible to all Google Workspace tiers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google accounts.
For standard consumers and workspace users outside the European Economic Area (EEA), the feature is enabled by default. Users in the EEA will find it toggled off initially to comply with local regulations, but you can turn it on manually by heading into Settings > Connected Apps within the Gemini web or mobile interface. Google Workspace administrators also retain domain-level controls to govern access based on organizational units.
Connecting Gemini’s general-purpose reasoning directly to our grounded personal research material makes the entire Workspace AI suite feel far more cohesive. We will be putting this through its paces in our ongoing daily workflow tests to see how reliably it handles complex cross-notebook source citations.
