When Google announced the powerful Gemini for TV AI assistant back in September, the roll-out plan was a bit vague. While it launched immediately on a high-end TCL TV series, the availability for other devices, including Google’s own popular Google TV Streamer (4K), was simply listed as “later this year.”
Now, alongside the start of the Gemini for Home voice assistant preview for speakers and displays, Google has provided a much clearer timeline: Gemini for Google TV will be coming to the Google TV Streamer and other supported devices “this winter.”
A smarter TV experience is coming soon
This is fantastic news for owners of the excellent Google TV Streamer and the surprisingly capable/affordable Walmart onn. 4K Pro as they both won’t have to wait too much longer to get the massive AI upgrade that Gemini will bring. The update is also slated to arrive this winter for select 2025 TV models from Hisense (U7, U8, UX) and TCL (QM7K, QM8K, X11K).
As a quick refresher, Gemini on Google TV replaces the standard Google Assistant, allowing for much more natural, “free-flowing conversations” about what you want to watch. You’ll be able to:
- Find content by describing vague preferences (e.g., “Find something for me and my wife; I like dramas, she likes lighthearted comedies”).
- Identify shows even if you don’t know the name (“What’s that new hospital drama?”).
- Get quick recaps of previous seasons.
- Ask for reviews and follow-up questions.
- Use your TV for learning, with Gemini providing answers alongside relevant YouTube videos.
While “this winter” still isn’t an exact date, it significantly narrows the window (likely December 2025 – February 2026). It’s great to know that a much smarter, more conversational AI assistant is just around the corner for some of the most popular Google TV devices. Google also teased that “more Gemini capabilities on TV [are] coming soon,” so the experience should only get better over time.
