ChromeOS 140 is rolling out now, but sadly, Gemini in Chrome isn’t along for the ride

The latest milestone update for ChromeOS is now beginning its journey to the stable channel. If you head to your settings, you should be able to pull down the update for ChromeOS 140 right now. But before you get too excited about a flood of new features, I’d suggest tempering your expectations a bit. This one appears to be a pretty quiet update; at least for now.

What we were hoping for and didn’t get

With the massive announcement yesterday about the new, game-changing AI features coming to the Chrome browser, and knowing that the ChromeOS 140 update was running a few days behind its original September 16th schedule, I was holding out a sliver of hope. My theory was that perhaps the delay was to align this OS update with the rollout of some of those slick new browser-based AI tricks like the agentic assistant or the smarter omnibox.

Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case. After updating my own devices to ChromeOS 140, I can confirm that those new AI features are not present in this build. It’s also unclear how or when those features will be implemented on ChromeOS, as Google’s announcement was specifically for the Chrome browser on Mac and Windows for now.

So what’s actually new?

As is often the case with these milestone updates, the initial rollout seems to be focused on under-the-hood improvements, security patches, and bug fixes. I haven’t spotted any major, user-facing changes just yet. This is fairly common, as Google will often lay the groundwork for new features in the OS update and then enable them via a server-side switch at a later date.

I’ll continue to dig into the ChromeOS 140 build and will be sure to report back if I uncover any hidden gems. For now, it’s a standard, foundational update. As always, the rollout is progressive, so it may take a few days to reach your device. You can check for it by heading to Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates.
