Chromebook Avatars Get Animated

August 11, 2017 By Gabriel Brangers Leave a Comment

In the ever-evolving world that is Material Design, developers are constantly tweaking, changing and update features in and outside of Chrome OS. One of the latest additions to the Canary Channel comes in the form of new Avatar options for users.

Avatars, or account pictures, are the small images in the bottom, right corner of your display. When you log into a Chrome OS device for the first time, you are generally given the option to chose or upload an image for this Avatar. These settings can be changed by heading to settings>people and clicking your account.

Below you can see the animated Origami images available in Canary. Fourteen in all, I personally like the fire-breathing Dragon.

Our friend Dinsan Francis from ChromeStory has been heads-down in the repositories and he came up with even more images that may soon replace the current Avatars for Chrome OS.  Here are eight more animations slated to be “default user” images for Chrome OS.

These PNG images have a decidedly more Material design feel to them. If you are wondering what the sixth image is you, aren’t alone. I had to Google “onigiri” before I realized it is a triangular rice roll wrapped in nori. I should get out more, I suppose.

Anyway, this a preview of what you can expect to see in the near future of UI changes to your Chromebook. Don’t worry, though: if you aren’t a fan of the new Avatars, you can still upload a file of your liking from the settings menu.

Thoughts? Do you like the new Material Design Avatars? Comment below and let your voice be heard.
