As I type this opening sentence on the surprisingly-great Pixelbook Go, I’m subtly reminded of what makes a great piece of hardware. The sweet spot sits somewhere between a finely crafted physical thing that is pleasing to look at, hold or touch and the way that thing goes about getting you to the digital, software-driven things you need, use and enjoy the most. It’s why gimmicks leave us a bit hollow, spec sheets don’t always translate to experience, and why the theoretical best isn’t always the best. With the Pixel 4, I'm not yet convinced to make the leap.

for the first year since Google started
0:01
making pixel phones I'm not actually

0:33
alright so let's get into this and if
0:35
you notice here on the table there is a
0:36
pixel for it's not the excel this is a
0:38
smaller one with the smaller battery
0:40
that is getting kind of knocked around
0:41
on the internet a bit but overall I like
0:44
the aesthetic quality here I like the
0:46
idea of a phone made by Google one that
0:48
has access to the latest version of
0:50
Android all the time and is updated
0:51
quicker than most and does a lot of
0:54
things and it's just kind of plugged
0:55
into all of Google services right out of
0:57
the Barrett right under the gate I like
0:59
all that those things are great it's why
1:01
I've always owned a pixel phone it's why
1:02
I've always found myself going back to
1:04
getting a pixel phone after trying out
1:06
other phones during the course of every
1:08
given year now that doesn't discount the
1:10
things I don't particularly like about
1:12
this phone I don't like the fact that
1:14
they didn't had a wide-angle lens I
1:16
don't care what they think is more
1:18
important to whatever type of
1:20
computational photography they're doing
1:21
wide-angle lenses are fun and they're
1:23
very useful to catch things that you
1:25
just can't get with software so it was
1:28
kind of an odd choice for them to do
1:29
that but again that's not the end of the
1:31
world it's still got a great camera in
1:33
it it's a pixel phone it's gonna have a
1:34
great camera but other cameras have kind
1:36
of caught up to them they've made no
1:37
strides and video so we're still stuck
1:39
with 4k 30 and honestly the dynamic
1:42
grains when you're doing video doesn't
1:43
look great I mean when you compare it
1:46
with what we're seeing coming out of the
1:47
new iPhones it honestly looks pedestrian
1:49
so that's kind of a knock I don't like
1:51
the big forehead up top don't really
1:53
like the notch from the 3xl either and
1:55
so we kind of go back to what do you do
1:57
if you're gonna put all those sensors in
1:59
I don't know I don't know exactly what
2:01
the answer is there but I don't think
2:02
having a big forehead and a small chin
2:04
at the bottom is the way to go I think
2:06
symmetry looks good for a reason and
2:08
kind of wish they would have gone with
2:09
that and maybe just
2:10
the front facing speaker there I don't
2:12
really know and when we're talking about
2:14
the screen 90 Hertz is great but we're
2:16
seeing the fact that if it's below
2:18
seventy five percent brightness you're
2:20
only getting 60 Hertz and you can force
2:22
90 Hertz but if you do that you kill the
2:25
already bad battery life and and so the
2:28
thinks are just kind of adding up with
2:29
this phone that made me go I I'm not
2:32
sure if I really want it this year and
2:34
the reason that we're even making this
2:37
video is because again I have ordered
2:38
the pixel phone as soon as I could and
2:41
eagerly awaited it to show up so I could
2:43
start using it each year that it's come
2:45
out pixel pixel to pixel 3 and pixel 3
2:49
axl so I've had all of them I've enjoyed
2:52
all of them and yeah there are nitpicks
2:54
with every phone not just pixel phones
2:56
every phone has shortcomings and the
2:58
four is gonna have shortcomings and
2:59
maybe you like the gimmicky things that
3:01
google's doing with motion sense and
3:03
swiping around and being able to take
3:05
pictures of stars but for me those are
3:08
not things that I'm looking at and going
3:10
man I cannot wait to get my hands on
3:12
this thing and use it to do those things
3:14
but ultimately what it ended up coming
3:15
down to for me was this conversation I
3:17
was actually having with Joe who's
3:18
behind the camera right now he and I
3:20
were sitting and talking about the pixel
3:21
4 and whether we were gonna upgrade and
3:23
for the first time I realized all of a
3:26
sudden I hadn't even pre-ordered I
3:28
hadn't gone through the process of
3:30
making sure I was gonna get one so I was
3:31
like well crap if I order now I'm not
3:33
gonna be late and I'm not gonna get it
3:34
when it releases and that didn't bother
3:36
me either and as we talked it through it
3:39
was odd the the mental gymnastics I was
3:42
going through to make myself want to
3:44
order a pixel 4 and let me take you
3:45
through it real quick in general I
3:47
looked at it and said well there's a
3:49
bunch of hardware stuff I don't really
3:50
care for about it but I've done this
3:52
before I've gone and gotten a different
3:53
phone and tried to make it as pixel II
3:56
and googly as I can and not ended up
3:59
liking it and eventually ending up with
4:01
a pixel again so I just decided you know
4:03
what I'm gonna stop doing that I'm just
4:05
gonna get the pixel 4 and gonna do
4:07
whatever it is that Google says I can do
4:09
on my phone and I'll just live with it
4:10
and the minute I started thinking about
4:13
that the minute I start saying to myself
4:14
well maybe next year they'll give us
4:17
this or maybe next year we'll get that I
4:19
sounded an awful lot like an iPhone you
4:22
and I'm not here to bash iPhone users
4:23
iPhones do a lot of things really really
4:26
well and I appreciate a lot of what
4:28
iPhones bring to the market and how they
4:30
help move smartphones forward but I
4:32
remember having a lot of friends who
4:33
were iPhone users and each year they
4:35
watched the keynote they'd see the new
4:36
features and on some things I'd be like
4:38
finally we got such-and-such and oh man
4:41
we didn't get this thing we were hoping
4:43
we were gonna get maybe next year
4:45
meanwhile I was watching all that and
4:47
going as an Android user well if this
4:50
phone doesn't get what I want and this
4:52
one does I'll just use this phone they
4:53
all use Android I have a choice it's
4:55
it's open I can I can move around I can
4:57
I can take my cell phone usage to
5:00
someone else and get what I'm asking for
5:02
out of a cell phone and so when I
5:03
thought about myself kind of taking that
5:06
approach with the pixel just saying well
5:08
I really don't like a lot of what
5:09
they're doing it I don't kind of like
5:11
the way the screen looks and it's a
5:13
little bit dim and they're brighter
5:15
screens out there better refresh rates
5:17
and better looking phones and better
5:20
camera assortments and really good
5:23
software and companies that are making
5:25
phones that get great update cycles and
5:28
you know oneplus phones that get updates
5:30
just as quick if not quicker sometimes
5:32
in pixel phones why am i stuck having to
5:36
accept what it is that Google is doing
5:38
with their phone and then I thought
5:41
about it for a second realized I I don't
5:43
I don't have to be stuck in that I'm an
5:45
Android user I can go and get any phone
5:48
I want and there's something I value
5:50
greatly about that openness I value
5:53
open-source software I value ecosystems
5:56
that I can move and take with me
5:57
wherever I want to go
5:58
sure I'm kind of locked into Google
6:00
services I'm a Chromebook user an
6:02
Android user I like Google services I
6:04
like their software but you know what if
6:06
I'm forced to I can take those services
6:08
and put them on a Mac or I can take
6:10
those services and put them on an iPhone
6:11
or an iPad or a Windows machine or Linux
6:14
I can use them anywhere I want to so I'm
6:16
not stuck using a piece of hardware that
6:18
I don't like just to get the services I
6:20
need and that's the difference iPhones
6:23
lock you into Apple's hardware and
6:25
software together so to get the best of
6:27
an iPhone you need to use their hardware
6:29
and their software together so sure you
6:31
can use Google stuff on an iPhone but
6:33
ultimately Apple once
6:34
use iCloud and they want you to use
6:36
Apple's version of basically everything
6:39
software related only with their hard
6:41
work so you can't use their software
6:42
anywhere else and so they kind of lock
6:44
you into this thing where you're like
6:45
this is the only phone I get and
6:47
whatever they say I will like this is
6:49
what I will like and I just push back
6:52
against that that's just my nature I
6:53
don't I don't like that I want to use
6:55
hardware because I like the hardware and
6:57
I like the way it makes me feel when I
6:58
use it and I enjoy the entire experience
7:01
and so because of that I'm pushing back
7:04
a little bit against the pixel for this
7:06
year because ultimately Google doesn't
7:07
offer from my perspective the best
7:10
possible hardware here do they have the
7:13
best camera on an Android phone
7:15
arguably yeah but they might arguably
7:17
have the best camera on any phone but I
7:19
feel like Apple might have come in and
7:21
superseded them in some ways in that and
7:23
especially with video I mean they're
7:25
they're miles ahead so they they don't
7:27
even have the best best camera you know
7:30
like they did just a couple years ago
7:31
where the pixel two and three were so
7:33
far ahead of everybody else so now of a
7:36
sudden what is the reason that I would
7:38
feel tied to the pixel brand of phones
7:40
and I honestly when I started thinking
7:42
about it I don't I don't have a lot of
7:44
reasons and so for that reason I chose
7:47
to go and pick up this the oneplus 70
7:50
because I get Android 10 I get all the
7:54
latest updates I get a 90 Hertz refresh
7:56
screen that gets up to a thousand it's a
7:58
brightness it's six point I don't know
8:01
three or four inches so that's plenty
8:04
large there's almost no notch whatsoever
8:06
on it I get RGB face unlock but I also
8:08
get a fingerprint scanner because oh by
8:10
the way the face unlock that works
8:12
really well in the pixel 4 doesn't work
8:15
with any apps really yet so all those
8:16
actually use your fingerprint to unlock
8:18
well you're back to putting in a
8:19
password or some sort of pin or
8:21
something like that to get into those
8:22
now because your face unlocks not gonna
8:25
work on that for a little while and so
8:26
as all these things add up is all these
8:28
differences and changes in the way that
8:30
phones are made start piling up and I
8:33
started thinking about it I just decided
8:35
it was time to move on and kind of
8:36
unshackle myself from Google's block in
8:40
that they're kind of trying to go about
8:42
getting with the pixel phones I don't
8:44
know if they'll ever get it because
8:45
ultimately androids open-source
8:47
everybody can
8:47
that filmmakers like oneplus can make
8:49
great phones and great hardware and keep
8:52
it updated if they choose to and they're
8:54
choosing to do that and I think they're
8:55
making better hardware it's the camera
8:57
better no but everything else about this
8:59
phone is and that's enough for me right
9:01
now to walk away from the pixel line
9:04
until something else comes out that at
9:06
least impresses me and inspires me to
9:08
pick it up and use it again from a
9:10
hardware perspective well guys that's it
