hey folks Robbie Payne with chrome unboxed and
0:11
give us just a second it's live does
0:17
that audio sound better hopefully that makes the audio sound better it helps if
0:22
I plug into microphone anyway guys we're here live from Google post the made by
0:28
Google event so we are there earlier this morning kind of got our hands on all the new stuff that Google's offering
0:35
before we get into any of that stuff I wanna make a couple introductions I know that with our traffic our our user base
0:43
between our YouTube channel and the website can be a little different so I wanted to introduce a couple guys to you
0:49
just as much as I do make chrome unbox tick so on my left and coming off his
0:56
first his first review is Gabriel ringers my right is the man that's
1:02
normally behind the camera today Joe Humphrey and you're looking at this
1:07
is kerwin box and so part of what we want to start doing here is using
1:12
YouTube live for stuff like this special events and those kind of things but also to actually start recording a
1:19
podcast we did a poll a few months back and we asked with you guys be interested
1:24
in podcast and overwhelming response was yes we've not had the ability in our
1:30
schedules to actually do that up until now but we're gonna make good on that for a little while hopefully be doing a
1:37
bi-monthly podcast and we're gonna do it in this format as long as this works out basically the way we're gonna work it is
1:43
we're gonna have a YouTube live times to where we can take some questions and just like today if you feel like getting
1:50
this up in chat do it we have a Chromebook down here we're keeping up with things you're going on
1:56
there so we want to answer questions we'll probably make some time for that at the end specifically but we wouldn't
2:02
kind of have an interactive session that we can also take and use that audio as a podcast for those that can't make it
2:07
whenever we have YouTube live session so I see how it goes you see if that format works good for us for you guys that want
2:14
to listen to that podcast but without further ado we kind of want to get started with
2:19
I mean we're live from Google yes so that's pretty cool we're we're live in
2:26
Mountain View yeah we're really excited to be here but the whole reason we came out here was for the made by Google some people
2:35
are calling it the pixel to event so so Robbie you're Gabe you know tell me a
2:40
little bit about what this event was what products did we see today
2:45
what are we most excited about right for the most part there wasn't a lot of
2:50
surprises this was all based around the new pixel phone just like last year's
2:56
original pixel photo we have pixel to pixel xl2 but we knew that the Google
3:03
home mini was coming which is a small version of the Google home speaker they did a couple of surprises we had heard a
3:10
leak about a Google home max a large stereo speaker we did not expect to see
3:16
it while we were here it showed up a $400 massive adaptable
3:22
learning speaker very interested in finding out more about it and then they had the
3:28
pixal buds yeah takes a little bit more about that because yeah this said this
3:34
is one of the things for me at least stole the show a little bit
3:39
that pixel buds are basically a set of wireless earbuds that on the surface
3:44
don't look like that in general you know it's the wire earbuds that kind of sit
3:50
on your neck that doing anything amazing that way but what they do offer is
3:55
obvious ties to be consistent the ability to call on Google assistant similar to
4:01
what we've seen in the O's qc5 - that just came out so we're gonna see
4:06
probably a lot of headphones was really striking about these is the
4:12
real-time language translation that they did they did a demo on stage I'm sure if
4:17
you haven't seen it you can go back and remember exactly where in the whole presentation that was because of our
4:23
campus events like that so it's worth watching the whole thing was really well done but they they brought one of the
4:29
speaker's out she came out and spoke in
4:40
her native tongue time was able to go back and forth in English yes phone was
4:47
the phone was putting out the audio in English yeah right and she was just speaking and she just yank her native
4:53
tongue is anything to speak to that they got the guy that had the phone and it but it it was like had to sit there and
4:58
they push buttons between it was just a seamless interaction that
5:05
it was a surprise so obviously there was
5:17
really exciting because there was a lot of so they they got to come and bail
5:57
this camera that they've already had DxO mark test that is his company they test cameras in
6:04
general last year they were able to unveil the pixel in pixel XLS having the highest EXL mark score 88 was in the cup
6:13
up to 90 yes it ranged 87 to 90 but it was the highest ever and then my phone
6:21
has come out I thought I'd come out looking it looks like that's just a staggeringly good camera a couple points
6:26
higher than that I've just been the stuff I've seen online it's looking amazing it's been capturing
6:33
and Google got to come out today and say yeah we we had this thing run through the XL park and it score the highest
6:38
score ever at a 98 and that's out of a hundred and DxO doesn't just give away
6:44
their scores easily so there's a ton we could spend a ton of time talking about
6:50
it's worth watching again worth watching the video back and looking at some of the stuff they're doing like you know
6:55
portrait mode with dual cameras it's a thing you know that everybody's kind of excited about and they're able to do some sort of dual pixel thing and create
7:02
that depth look it's a large look with a single camera
7:08
and some of the machine learning and AI that's that's been behind everything they conquered artificial intelligence
7:14
taking hardware and software and making them go together that was behind
7:19
and clearly that they did the same thing with the camera so it's a mix of cool
7:25
software machine learning may I and I'll accept that they can't do all these cool trip to it and man it looks like it is
7:32
gonna be stunning but obviously guys I mean we we we flew all the way out here for one particular
7:39
product that was announced today so tell me a little bit about the pixel book
7:44
it's it's it's a just about everything that we thought it was you know they
7:50
announced that we were 99.99 percent sure that they would
7:56
he heads him inside him mother came to us in last couple days like that kind of key to stand on some of the features
8:03
that him was and was not going to to have but the minute we walked out of the
8:09
event and we're able to get him his lights Wow I mean just wow
8:15
the first thing you will notice about it is it is finished yes it is a ten point
8:21
three millimeters then it is a laptop version
8:29
glass back across the top yeah and I echo that because
8:35
the event was crowded today and so it it was good our efforts over before I I
8:40
didn't anything more than just literally touch his reception okay I'm not gonna I'm not gonna fight with
8:47
people hallway and the guys at Google men were just so so gracious we had
8:53
quite a few people we got to spend a lot of time with them
8:59
and talk with them and they got to share with us and you know they're reading the site and so it
9:05
was that was really really cool so shout out the damage they were awesome today
9:10
but yeah I I remember just being stunned I picked it up because it's it's one
9:15
kilogram so it's not heavy no and just for perspective hold your
9:21
smartphone app like licking your smartphone maybe with the case in the real thing case is a palace thickness
9:26
the entire fix with this yeah and they've done some really awesome engineering so that when he folded into
9:32
tablet mode it literally and they sold this on stage right but absolutely true that you flipped into tablet mode is the
9:39
first convert walk ever held it actually feels like a tablet when it's in town mode still got the keys on the back but
9:45
other than that I mean it the build quality IQ yeah they they did they did
9:50
some things with with the screw it's it's likely identical to the scream and the screen in the Samsung Chromebook pro
9:57
but they have the bezels shaped in such a way that it just it's very symmetrical
10:03
pointed out the build of the keyboard is very very intentional their research
10:10
and the trackpad or is recessed as well so when it isn't a blur
10:16
noting the etched glass touchpad the keyboard nothing
10:22
soft touch keyboard and I was reading I think I told you this the travel is actually it is 0.8 is the travel
10:35
one of the engineers that's been chromebooks it's the beginning he was
10:41
talking specifically about the keyboard and how intentional they were about give him to travel right I think hitting the
10:47
responsiveness right so that it clicked up when it supposed to and and you know we don't want to be have people to go
10:53
and hate on other other things but you know I've typed on
10:58
new keyboard that's on Macs there was a real slim travel and especially on a MacBook and travels just I don't like it
11:05
it almost feels like you're hitting on them does the hard surface it barely moves whatsoever and I get it you want
11:11
to have a thin device with a keyboard and they said they were they went through painstaking ordeals and trial
11:17
that came from reckoning hundreds of attempts they went here to get your keys just right and I'm not joking it it
11:24
feels better than typing on the first two pixels of that same such saying so because those keyboards on those things
11:30
amazing it feels better and what you're saying the travel is actually less so
11:35
yeah so I don't know that there is a ton of engineering yeah so design is his top
11:43
match and I mean that's what we heard we knew that that they wanted to put out a top-notch product you know that was on
11:49
par with didn't really buy in this in this category so the designer in the build of
11:56
this thing is just is amazing but let's let's talk a little bit about features that's a good ticket we have a few
12:01
people watcher viewers asking some questions so we don't get too last about the pin because let's talk
12:09
features and pens so let us kind of interact and what what what unique things does this thing does
12:14
this pixel up to you so the pixel book in it is it is a separate accessory it's
12:20
$99 but it's obviously a little bit more like a writing utensil than the Samsung
12:25
growing less than say but it is made it
12:36
does have a barrel button and this is probably the most interesting feature is right now the barrel button invokes the
12:44
assistant so have some video we'll share maybe later tonight or in the morning you can hold
12:50
that circle and item on your screen or highlight tags the assistant to do a
12:57
contextual search share information based on whatever
13:03
we've had some people asking about the pin if it will work with other devices they worked hand in hand with whacko to
13:09
make this it's plausible that it might work with some other devices I wouldn't
13:15
buy one encounter on it from a lot of the stuff we've dug up in the depository pretty sure that this is
13:22
the first compactive we've been to store but it's right lakum digitizer so
13:27
there's a chance because it does take a battery so there's probably some stuff in there so it may or may not work
13:35
yeah I wouldn't I wouldn't buy it thinking hey I'm gonna pass heaven actually paying for my Sam sons of other
13:40
digitizer our silence in April Chromebook is that I'm not sure how those things will work
13:46
obviously what we do in our hands we try some of that stuff yeah and we have a they had it was really cool to go in
13:53
there because they didn't just have a couple of these laying around they actually had one area of the event set
13:59
up with probably 10 maybe it doesn't say like 15 15 Chromebooks that had displayed on
14:08
them images that people had drawn completely with
14:13
yeah it's pretty phenomenal because I mean you're looking at a device and to detect over 2000
14:20
different pressure levels 60% 60-degree angle or detection and riding
14:27
with it you know I noticed instantly as
14:33
soon as I started riding with it just a latency oh yeah there was just feel is
14:39
it feels so much like riding I mean the pro just did a really good job with this
14:45
but I think I think they've really even improved it more here oh yeah the latency isn't to me honestly was not
14:52
noticeable no no I literally couldn't notice my sort of latency whenever I had the paper yeah that's awesome buddy in
14:58
their ass doesn't open with one hand I did try that yeah and before we go in
15:10
for that the VM features go ahead let you know we did have some some aside
15:16
time with some of the developers and let's department and we'll talk about
15:21
that later this week just so you know this was Google's Hardware event it was a reflection of last year's Hardware
15:27
event this is where Google is putting dollars to sell products to the general
15:33
public there was not any discussion about that from the stage and likely that's not something you're going to hear about
15:39
on Main Street news that's
15:45
a lot of our readers and a lot of the stuff that we write about the general public does care about and we'll we'll
15:51
share we'll share some of that later yeah thank you know that there's a nice-looking Chromebook out there and
15:58
they can go by and speaking now coming back to some of the other specs that are on it memory options why it's so much
16:09
memory over you know and they brought up some really good points
16:15
as as app developers are now going to have a reason platforms
16:23
they're never reason to build one desk top quality applications that will run named roids to ensure but long crumbling
16:31
picture and as that kind of happens and if you see that kind of folding for like
16:36
Adobe would be a program able they showed have lighter and running and it's it's a desktop class library it's not
16:43
virginal librarian so as you start seeing more and more applications like this people are gonna hit me storing
16:49
more and more stuff so using Lightroom you might be editing
16:54
massive you might have keep locally store before you start sending stuff Ellsberg so you know that
17:01
kept kind of reiterating look we want to make sure we have an option for pretty much any English
17:06
faces for added so that was kind of their answer to the large hard drives
17:12
there still could be a lot of stuff the container technology and all the
17:18
stuff could play out whether we ever see it mainstream sure and someone else
17:24
asked about a ECMO probably not
17:34
you know they had an LTE version before but I just it's been a very narrow market there
17:41
one for rent a drone 200 I think yeah that has LTE I mean
17:48
they might they might not it's just not something that's really a huge issue but one feature we did see today was the
17:54
incent every yes so talk about that for a second because that was really interesting to me so we talked to a win
17:59
and it's been probably cool months since that was uncovered like hey this is being added to Chrome OS and Chromebooks
18:06
kind of stuff this is the first time we've seen it yes Blake we mentioned like it's just this is the thing that
18:12
pixel book does right yeah and we see I think Chrome stories actually
18:17
but we've seen some guys in the Google community who've shared to share how it works and essentially what it is if you
18:24
have a pixel photo and you have a pixel book and and presumably this will work with other
18:30
in the food future from the flag that we we found it's the phones have to be
18:35
google-specific so Nexus 6p 5x pixel pixel I'd sell whatever the
18:41
current if you come within range of your phone
18:52
we'll automatically
18:57
so you don't lose your connectivity yeah which is will come in really handy so
19:03
let's talk a little bit about some of those other features that we saw today you know we we didn't get a fingerprint
19:10
reader a fingerprint scanner right but we got an assistant but so you know talk
19:16
a little bit about that and some of those other you know key features to eat it out on the device yeah we've talked
19:22
through some of this stuff this is where we found a there's gonna be a new keyboard play here's the keys one of
19:28
those things in assistance there look inside you can interact with it just
19:37
it'll also answer to saying okay and I'm not going to say it your own say they'd say a keyword will
19:45
pop up but additionally that taco has changed as well so you get that far
19:50
right but now instead of being like a lot of convertibles with a lock button
19:55
you've got a contextual button that actually opens up here Trey over on the right-hand side you got a play/pause
20:01
button there in the middle they've got rid of the forward button
20:09
it's cool to see those new keys and that new people setup you know it's just being this more of that stuff like yeah
20:15
we had covered this stuff early and here it's like here this reflection
20:22
yeah guys and I mean you know the the features you know are supporting the
20:29
hardware right so I mean you know that's what that's what they said on stage is that this is advice that software and
20:35
hardware working perfectly together with with AI so with with the assistant goes over right so you know we've got this
20:41
device now so what exactly does this mean for the Chrome OS ecosystem kind of
20:47
as a whole right so we've got this great new device what does it mean moving
20:53
I think think about the fact that this device is expensive
21:00
there's a very different attitude towards the 20:15
21:07
pixal so the 2015 Chromebook pixel pay and they drop the price and up for the entry-level to $9.99 but should sound
21:13
here that's what the pixel books comes in the interesting part is when Google
21:19
without the Chromebook pixel 2015 just like they did in 2013 they've brought this device out hey this is for maybe a
21:26
handful of Bella burgers it's just a showcase to show what Google
21:32
yes that was really kind of the whole idea not worried about selling too many of them they don't fly people thought
21:37
well maybe that's what they're doing pixel book - and I've contended the whole time and was affirmed in this with
21:42
talking to the guys from last team that's not the direction you're looking
21:48
at with this device so sure it's the same price sure it's super
21:53
premium but they included it in the made by Google event and just like right Gabriel alluded to just a little bit ago
22:00
if you think about this you know that this event was for mainstream consumers
22:05
this event we love our readers
22:13
most part of you all and in us we don't represent the general consumer we don't
22:18
represent the general
22:24
we're not those people will dig look research all the screen stuff that's not
22:29
that general consumer whose general consumer you know see stuff in the stores he's a commercial that's how they hear about this product
22:36
and that's exactly where they've named this device and so regardless of price and how great it is
22:43
maybe it's hi-hi aim for a firm look google clearly is naming this name
22:52
and that's that's the thing that they believe besides after we got the chaplains in there
22:59
they're pushin Alice [Music]
23:07
because that matter is there a large number people using them down
23:12
but there's still a lot of people who have you ask them what a Chromebook is they might not have even heard it
23:20
so that's their goal now is to make it a marketable
23:28
making the pixel book they creating
23:33
high-end product that's still other devices than I mean because let's
23:39
look at the surface laptop $999 and they were targeting college students I guess
23:46
is who they were Amy get in so just been a thousand
23:54
and they pointed out some other stuff too that was I asked the pressed on this Allah -
24:01
she's like okay will doesn't this seem a little bit out of reach for some of the insane am to spend
24:06
this much Chromebook because it's not going to do as much stuff as I watch and
24:12
that kind of comes back to this whole idea that now that there's a platform there are going to be more desktop
24:18
applications that are coming along and yeah they couldn't comment on it and they couldn't say specifically what was
24:23
going on but it's clear in the writing is very much on the wall that that's the direction is going and this device kind
24:32
of as a halo device basically becomes the one that people get it may honestly
24:38
be kind of as a status symbol they pointed that out they've done damn research and seeing kids that have
24:44
whatever device it is when they go and they they graduate and go to college and they're gonna go buy their first device
24:49
they're taking somewhere they want to buy something that works for them but it also is like
24:56
I want to show the beads up here yeah he's status soon I don't want it to look like a toilet and so this they've realized that
25:03
there's there's a massive section of the market that's there for most rapidly growing portion of the laptop market
25:09
general is that at thousand dollar-plus device it's just where the market is and
25:15
there they want the piece of it going after that use - and as functionality kind of meets up with it and I think
25:22
it'll happen quicker now because of this device things change in that space pretty rapidly
25:30
I know what takes about Gus No a year ago if you walk down the street said hey you're gonna get a Google home
25:36
most people look at you know what what does that mean find loads at Walmart I
25:44
mean they're everywhere people know whether they're buying rods they know
25:49
what I think this device the halo device is gonna kind of have that effect whether
25:55
you buy it or not
26:05
yeah so you know speaking of about people getting this product when do we expect to start seeing this you know
26:12
what what's you pre-order this thing where can you get yeah Google did say
26:17
available on October 31st three orders are up for both so you can get
26:26
Intel Core i5 with 128 gigs of storage 8 gigs of RAM or 8 gigs of RAM a 256
26:33
vehicle storage pre-order at the Google store store
26:39
already we have a weekend in the check that out they did not give a tax
26:46
on the four i7 available
26:58
and there's been some people asking about the pin on the side already and Twitter where do you put it
27:05
because it's not like the pros that's not stowable they apparently have
27:11
already started marketing and coming soon sleeves
27:19
that's it
27:27
intentions of stowing it ten millimeter big device yeah a little bit it's the thinnest weight
27:36
yeahjust relativity yeah yeah that was that was where I was fiery - yeah what's up so yeah I mean
27:43
that's that's it I mean the most part guys today we just wanted to give you all a little recap of the event and
27:49
obviously talk about what we came here for which was the pixel book we're really excited about this device and
27:55
we're excited for what it means for further lessons so we hope that you all continue to support subscribe to our
28:01
youtube channel subscribe to the to the website and just follow along with this
28:07
and so you know for everyone that's tuned in we've got a we've got a quite a few viewers right now which is great you
28:13
know we're really excited about this I mean we're out here in Google and we just went to an awesome Google event we
28:18
kind of had to remind ourselves all day like we're just as excited about all of this is everybody you know that's here
28:24
you know so so we want we want to share a little bit that love so we're gonna be doing a giveaway we're gonna do a
28:29
giveaway for a chromecast all you have to do is share this video
28:35
so share a link to this video on Twitter tag us at chroma boxed and use the
28:40
hashtag made by Google everyone that does that will be entered to win will pick a winner let's say this time next
28:48
week this time next week alright we really have all the details here absolutely alright so we'll do that
28:59
we'll do a giveaway just to share a little bit of that love and the excitement we have for this and we hope
29:04
you guys hear that Robbie anything else
29:11
I think there's obviously obviously before we're going to be talking about pizza book
29:18
hopefully when we're talking about when it could be available the end of October sure pre-orders and stuff are available
29:24
but we're hoping to be able get our hands on one not really sure what will or won't be
29:31
covered up although my guess would be none of that stuff woods it's kind of in Vail fully so the minute we get our
29:37
hands on it obviously we're gonna be unboxing that guy and giving you some real-world testing we're gonna do a lot of
29:43
different stuff with this one because again we're we're putting all this effort behind it because this is this is
29:51
a kind of monumental device and a life from OS and a life probably of our
29:57
website in general which we realized this gofyn a ranger that's gonna follow this device
30:03
we're excited about it so now we want to give it some special treatment we want to give it we're just going to do some
30:11
cool stuff around it so make sure I know Joe's already said this will make sure if you're not already subscribe to the
30:17
channel and give some thumbs up on here and check out some of the other reviews that we have go to the website the place
30:24
to sign up for the newsletters the kind of get breaking news if you're into Chrome OS and into Chromebooks it's a great place to keep up with stuff we're
30:31
finding out every day more and more people that are getting their their Chromebook fix their common bond about
