The Google Home Mini isn't exactly a massive departure or technological marvel. What it is, however, could be game-changing for Google Assistant and Google's foray into smart speakers. This is based on one thing and one thing alone: price. At $49, does the Google Home Mini measure up? Here's our first impressions after a couple days.

hey folks Robbie Payne with chrome
0:09
unboxed and today we're gonna give some
0:11
first impressions of our first few days
0:14
spent with the Google home mini now I've
0:16
had the Google home the regular sized
0:18
version at home since it actually came
0:21
out and so bringing this one back from
0:24
the Google event and actually plugging
0:25
it in and using it at the house I wanted
0:27
to give you a few first impressions to
0:30
let you know if you're deciding on
0:32
buying one of these devices which one
0:33
might be a better fit for you so first
0:35
off one of the things you can tell about
0:37
the Google home Mini is obviously it's
0:40
much smaller and additionally it's a lot
0:43
cheaper as well so $129 is what the
0:46
Google home comes in and $49 is what the
0:49
Google home Mini comes in so you can
0:50
probably do the math pretty quickly and
0:52
see you can get two and a half Google
0:55
home minis for the price of one and so
0:57
what that would allow you to do is
0:58
actually have more Google homes
0:59
throughout your home and take advantage
1:02
of some of the other things that Google
1:03
home can do there are a couple drawbacks
1:05
though and probably need to talk about
1:07
those things because with that price cut
1:09
comes a few feature cuts as well
1:11
now what Google did here in what's
1:13
really kind of cool is that they created
1:15
a specific fabric for this device that
1:18
allows you to see the LEDs through the
1:20
top it also allows you to interact with
1:22
it on a touch basis and so some of those
1:24
cool things that Google home did this
1:26
device can do also and so you don't
1:28
really lose out anything there but its
1:30
diminutive size means that the speakers
1:32
inside of it are actually smaller and
1:34
while Google stood on stage and touted
1:36
the excellent sound quality of it and
1:38
don't get me wrong it's it's loud and
1:40
you can hear it just fine it's not going
1:42
to replace a dedicated speaker in your
1:45
home it's loud enough to hear the
1:47
commands and interact with but playing
1:49
music over it is a dicey affair
1:53
especially when compared with the Google
1:55
home the regular version of the Google
1:57
home the Google home doesn't have the
1:59
most pristine sound quality but it can
2:02
suffice as a standalone speaker and has
2:04
pretty rich tones to it if not for a
2:07
little bit of a muddled high-end this
2:09
device has the mini has a great high-end
2:12
but the
2:12
literally is no base response on it
2:14
whatsoever so if you're listening to
2:16
most music you're gonna miss out on
2:18
quite a bit of the experience there now
2:19
that being said because it works with
2:22
chromecast Audio you can actually pair
2:24
this thing up into an audio group and be
2:26
playing through multiple speakers at
2:28
once and enhance the sound overall but
2:31
by itself do know that if you're buying
2:34
this for a speaker and you're wanting to
2:36
actually listen to music on it it's not
2:38
going to be the best experience ever but
2:40
pushing that aside you really don't lose
2:42
out on any of the features that Google
2:44
home offers so you can tap the top of it
2:46
in order to play in Paul's music you can
2:49
speak to it obviously with your voice to
2:50
wake it up it has LEDs on the top that
2:53
let you know when you're communicating
2:54
with it when it's thinking and all those
2:56
kind of things though they don't spin
2:58
around in a circle in the cool way that
2:59
the Google home does but it's enough to
3:01
let you know that the thing is thinking
3:03
and it's you're interacting with it
3:04
additionally you can tap on the left or
3:06
right side to adjust your volume and so
3:08
there's a ton of interaction that you
3:10
get just like you would get with the
3:11
standard Google home and that's pretty
3:13
cool especially when it comes in at such
3:15
a lower cost overall in general the
3:18
cloth top works as Google I said it does
3:21
it's very easy to see the LEDs through
3:23
the speaker comes through it nice and
3:25
loud and it's attractive and it's kind
3:27
of unassuming if you want an idea of how
3:29
large it is Google advertised this as
3:31
well even at the event they were handing
3:33
out Donuts because the thing is about
3:35
the size of a doughnut so a general
3:37
doughnut if you think about it in your
3:38
hand that would be the size of this
3:39
device and so it takes up a lot less
3:41
real estate on your countertop than the
3:44
original Google home does and so for a
3:46
lot of people that's going to be a win
3:48
all in itself it does have the kind of
3:50
rubber feet on the bottom so it's not
3:51
going to slide around and the port on
3:54
the back that actually holds the charger
3:55
is a micro USB and though some people
3:58
have kind of given them a hard time for
4:00
that I don't really see it being that
4:02
big of a deal because in general you're
4:04
gonna plug this thing in and it's gonna
4:05
sit there the Google home has its own
4:08
proprietary power jack so overall though
4:10
the device is very simple very elegant
4:13
looking and would basically blend into
4:16
most two cores in any home and that
4:19
again is saying something over the
4:20
original google home which a lot of
4:22
people compare to a Glade air freshener
4:24
or something like that
4:25
it wasn't ugly and isn't ugly but it
4:28
doesn't blend into your decor quite as
4:31
easily as this device will the one
4:34
you're seeing here is in the gray it
4:35
also comes in a dark charcoal almost a
4:37
black color for the top piece and then
4:40
also a coral kind of a reddish orange
4:42
coral color as well so there'll be
4:45
different colors it's not a swappable
4:47
top like the bottom is on the Google
4:49
home but you can kind of purchase one
4:51
that might go better with your personal
4:53
decor generally the device is going to
4:56
become available on the 19th of October
4:58
along with most of the other products
5:00
that Google unveiled and again it's
5:02
gonna be $49 and really to get into a
5:05
device that's going to do all that this
5:07
thing does all that the Google home at
5:09
129 dollars does is pretty much a steal
5:13
I would say most people that haven't
5:15
gotten into a smart speaker setup yet
5:18
and been holding out maybe they wanted
5:19
Google home over Alexa or something like
5:22
that maybe you've been holding out
5:23
waiting for a good deal well the deal
5:25
doesn't get much better than this thing
5:26
and like I said if you're gonna spend
5:28
even roughly around $100 for the
5:30
original Google home you could have a
5:31
couple of these and have them paired up
5:33
and you can use them as alarm clocks and
5:35
all sorts of things throughout your home
5:37
and they can be set up as audio groups
5:39
and some of the new things that Google
5:40
is talking about with broadcast you can
5:42
be able to send messages to the entire
5:44
household and set alarms and all those
5:46
kind of things because it to be honest
5:48
even as you're watching this if you're
5:50
three or four weeks out from the time
5:52
that we film this likely Google home is
5:54
going to have all sorts of new skills
5:56
that it can do that it can't do right
5:58
now and so it's it's worthwhile to keep
6:00
note that this device will be able to do
6:02
all the things that Google home can do
6:04
so it's not some sort of gimped version
6:06
of it it's full-on Google home full-on
6:08
google assistant it's just the speaker's
6:10
not quite as good and you can't swap out
6:12
the basis
6:13
but other than that so far so good it's
6:16
been really great in our home and we
6:17
look forward to spending a little bit
6:19
more time and maybe giving you guys a
6:21
full-on review as some time goes by and
6:23
we can say definitively this is a great
6:25
device to have in your home but I can
6:27
say right now after a few days of using
6:29
I think most of you will be happy if
6:31
you're considering Google home as your
6:33
smart speaker of choice before we wrap
6:35
up I do want to mention the t-shirt that
6:37
I'm wearing right now we had
6:38
few of these printed and we wanted to
6:40
get y'all's feedback and we wanted to
6:42
see if this is something that you all
6:43
would like him would be interested in
6:45
and so you can hit us up in the comments
6:46
hit us up on on the website additionally
6:49
we are actually going to put up a forum
6:51
on the site in the coming days where you
6:54
can actually pre-order and we need to
6:56
get to a certain number of pre-orders
6:58
obviously before we go printing a shirt
6:59
and so we may do something like just
7:03
taking in names of people to say yeah I
7:05
would like a shirt and if we can get to
7:06
100 or so we'll go ahead and get a run
7:09
of these things printed and actually put
7:11
them up for sale so like I said hit us
7:13
up in the comments hit us up on social
7:14
media or on the website and let us know
7:16
if you'd be interested in getting a
7:18
shirt like this they're really high
7:19
quality and and we're kind of proud of
7:21
them they turned out really good so I'll
7:23
let us know on that guys if you liked
7:24
this video give it a thumbs up hit the
