For most products, most of the time, we unbox them when they show up at the office, spend some time with them, and then create a review. The Google Home Max has been a bit of a different beast, though. Without having a slew of new, undiscovered functionality or a unique set of specs, this speaker ends up being just that: a speaker. The need for review, then, isn't the same as something like a Chromebook.
We never did a review of any of the other Google Home speakers, so why start now?
All jokes aside, trying to put together a review felt forced and odd. Instead, I really felt like most of you would benefit from my slightly longer-term thoughts from using the Google Home Max for a couple months. After all, this thing is a little pricey and doesn't perform any tasks that its cheaper siblings can't at fractions of the price.
That isn't to say it isn't a compelling device, though. Quite the opposite, actually. There's a lot to like in the Google Home Max and it could very well be a great speaker for you and your family.

hey folks probably paying with chroma
0:10
and boxed and today we're gonna take a
0:11
little bit deeper look at the Google
0:13
home Max and I'm not calling this a
0:15
review because we review Chromebooks and
0:17
we talk about specs and functionality
0:19
and all that kind of stuff and that
0:21
really just doesn't apply to a smart
0:23
speaker so this device doesn't really do
0:25
much more than its other counterparts
0:27
the Google home many in the standard
0:29
Google home but it does one thing that's
0:31
much much better and that's the way it
0:33
sounds now if you're in the market for a
0:36
speaker that sounds great and can fill
0:38
very very large rooms this might be the
0:41
device for you but if you're just
0:43
looking for a smart speaker to do
0:44
functionality stuff you're looking for
0:46
it to set reminders and timers and that
0:48
kind of thing you might want to kind of
0:49
stick around to the end of this thing
0:51
and decide whether or not four hundred
0:52
dollars is realistic for you to spend
0:54
but let's talk about sound because
0:56
that's probably the most important thing
0:57
here this device sounds incredible I
1:00
mean I don't know that I've had any
1:03
other speakers around me that sound
1:05
quite as good now Google has colored the
1:08
tonality of this device so it's not just
1:10
a standard speaker it wouldn't stand in
1:12
for like a studio speaker it's not
1:14
completely flat you can tell the bass is
1:17
enhanced a little bit and the highs are
1:18
enhanced a little bit but I really don't
1:20
care
1:21
it sounds freakin amazing and matter of
1:24
fact let's let's take a break real quick
1:26
and actually get an audio sample
1:30
[Music]
1:39
you can't do
1:40
[Music]
1:47
so as you can tell it sounds amazing I
1:50
mean it is a great speaker and again I
1:52
can't put it up against the home pot I
1:53
don't have a home pot to put here and
1:55
there are some reviewers that would say
1:56
it sounds better than the home pod and
1:58
some let's say that the home pod sounds
1:59
better I'm really not here to debate
2:01
that and I don't think that in your
2:02
purchasing decision you even need to be
2:04
thinking about that and I'll get into
2:05
that here in just a second as to why
2:07
suffice to say it sounds amazing and
2:10
it's gonna fill just about any room I've
2:13
the biggest room I've put it in it's
2:15
probably a 25 by 25 space in in our
2:19
office and it fills it up at maybe a
2:22
quarter of the volume we pushed it to a
2:24
hundred percent and it doesn't distort
2:26
it just keeps getting louder and the
2:28
bass keeps getting fuller in the highs
2:30
keep getting crisper so if you're
2:33
looking to fill up a massive space was
2:35
sound the Google home acts is for you if
2:37
we start talking about functionality
2:39
there's there's really not much that
2:40
differentiates this from their standard
2:42
Google home and the Google home Mini
2:43
there's some touch controls on the top
2:45
you can slide left and right in order to
2:48
turn the volume up and down if you want
2:50
to actually physically interact with the
2:51
device in the center of that bar you can
2:54
play pause and then you can talk to it
2:56
that's that's basically it it does a
2:58
couple other cool tricks we turn it
3:00
upside down it'll tell you Google home
3:02
is upside down please turn it back over
3:04
so it's got a gyroscope in it and
3:06
there's a reason for that there's a
3:07
silicon pad that magnetically hooks
3:09
itself to the bottom and/or the side of
3:12
the device and so you can actually tilt
3:13
it up on one end pair a second one into
3:17
a audio group in Google home and you can
3:21
then create a left and right separation
3:23
with the two if you wanted to hook it up
3:24
to say a mixing table or something like
3:27
that I can't imagine how loud it would
3:29
be with two of these things in one room
3:32
let alone just one of them so I'm sure
3:35
there are people that would want to use
3:36
it that way and drop the coin to be able
3:38
to do that but honestly one is plenty
3:40
and when it's in its standard layout
3:43
when it's left and right kind of kind of
3:44
set this way in its landscape form it
3:47
already does stereo separation so inside
3:49
you're getting two tweeters and two
3:50
woofers and they just do the job
3:53
incredibly well but other than that
3:55
there's really not a ton of
3:56
functionality going on here there's some
3:58
ports along the back as well USB see
4:00
that you can char
4:01
of being like a phone or a pixel book or
4:04
something like that if you if you choose
4:05
to and then there's an auxilary port on
4:08
the back that you can actually plug
4:09
something in so again I mentioned a
4:10
turntable earlier so say you have a
4:12
turntable or something like it or you
4:14
wanna hook your phone in and just play
4:15
music directly from that if you're not
4:17
on Wi-Fi for instance then then you have
4:19
the choice to do that as well but again
4:20
we're not really talking about a ton of
4:22
functionality here we're talking about a
4:24
smart speaker with Google assistant that
4:27
sounds amazing and at the end of the day
4:29
that's what it is and so really we have
4:32
to look at price when it comes to this
4:33
this thing because there's other ones in
4:36
its family so we have the Google home
4:39
which can be found anywhere from a
4:40
hundred to $129 and then you've got the
4:42
mini that goes on sale sometimes it can
4:44
be as cheap as twenty nine bucks and so
4:46
again if you're looking for something
4:48
that's gonna set reminders and timers
4:49
and do all the cool stuff that Google
4:51
assistant can do in a smart speaker the
4:53
Google home Mini actually does all of
4:55
this really really well if you're
4:57
looking for something to give you
4:58
ambient small sound the Google how many
5:02
does that well two now if you're looking
5:04
for something that you know might give
5:05
you some decent room filling sound and
5:08
have a little more richness to it the
5:10
standard Google home does a great job
5:11
with that it's got all the touch
5:13
controls on the top just as this one
5:14
does but if you're looking for something
5:16
that has premium sound and you're not
5:19
just looking to buy a smart speaker
5:20
you're looking to buy a piece for your
5:23
home that's actually going to provide
5:24
really really great audio then the
5:27
Google home max might be for you I
5:29
haven't seen it on sale yet so it's
5:31
usually gonna be $399 so you really got
5:34
to think do I want to spend this much
5:35
money on a speaker I can't answer that
5:37
for you
5:38
I can tell you that for me personally
5:40
I'm not there yet now I have a Bose
5:43
home theater system at home that we cast
5:45
music to our TV and it plays on there
5:48
just fine and it sounds amazing so I
5:49
don't have as much need for it and our
5:51
home is a two-story so each level isn't
5:55
isn't that huge so when I did take the
5:57
Google home max home the kids loved it
5:59
and they loved playing with it and they
6:00
love hearing how loud it got and all
6:02
that kind of stuff but ultimately when I
6:04
thought about like would I use this
6:05
thing at home for me it was just a no I
6:08
I can't my home is just not big enough
6:11
but the office has been plenty big
6:12
enough and there's been multiple time
6:14
where we maybe had some get-togethers or
6:16
had a few people in the office at one
6:19
time and we needed some music and you
6:20
can put this thing on at medium to low
6:22
volumes and the bass stays around and
6:24
the highs stay around and it just
6:26
provides room filling sound at any
6:28
volume and so you got to think through
6:30
what you're gonna use this thing for and
6:32
if you don't have a premium home speaker
6:34
and you want something that provides
6:35
just great and awesome audio then ya
6:38
think about this because other speakers
6:41
that sound as good as this are gonna
6:42
cost at least this or more and then you
6:44
get Google assistant thrown in so this
6:46
isn't going to be for everybody I
6:48
completely understand that but if it's
6:50
if it might be for you and you haven't
6:52
had a chance to listen to one you
6:53
haven't had a chance to mess around with
6:55
one you're not missing much as far as
6:57
functionality goes there's there's not
6:59
gonna be much to do whenever you get in
7:00
front of it except turn on some music
7:02
sit back and listen and if that's what
7:04
you're after $399 is a lot for a speaker
7:08
it's a lot for a smart speaker but if
7:10
you're in that market and you're looking
7:12
for awesome sound this thing delivers so
7:14
I hope I've helped you make a little bit
7:16
of a purchasing decision here I know I'm
7:19
saying that maybe it's not for me and
7:20
it's not because it's bad it's just
7:22
because for me for my house for the
7:24
things that I do it's just not a good
7:27
fit but I think for a lot of you it
7:28
could be and if it's not hey check out
7:31
the standard Google home or the Google
7:33
home Mini or have a few of each who
7:35
knows whatever fits you best hopefully
7:38
it will help you out guys if you like
7:40
this video give it a thumbs up subscribe
