hey folks Robbie pay with chrome unboxed
0:02
coming at you today with something a
0:04
little bit different than normal
0:06
obviously there's no equipment here for
0:08
me to unbox nothing for me to review but
0:10
there are some very very important
0:12
changes coming to Chrome OS and that
0:14
means some really significant changes
0:17
for our beloved Chromebooks Chrome boxes
0:19
Chrome bases
0:22
[Music]
0:28
Etc all right so what is this big
0:30
announcement what is this big change
0:32
it's very simple Android apps the Google
0:34
Play Store as a whole is coming to
0:37
Chrome OS and it is a huge deal I could
0:40
I could say that and if everybody kind
0:42
of got what all that means uh you could
0:45
just say that and and be on with your
0:47
day and be excited that that's coming um
0:50
but there's a lot to it uh there's some
0:52
Nuance things and there's some things to
0:53
know and things honestly mostly to be
0:55
excited about um and and hopefully we're
0:57
going to take just a few minutes and
0:59
Digest a little bit of this stuff
1:01
together so at IO last week Google
1:04
unveiled on Thursday they didn't do it
1:06
at the keynote um they just kind of slid
1:08
this in Thursday morning that it is
1:10
official that Android apps are coming to
1:12
Chrome OS and what that means is unlike
1:15
arc welder that they released a couple
1:16
years ago that gave you this emulated
1:18
siloed version of Android apps that
1:20
sometimes worked and sometimes didn't
1:22
this is in in fact the entire Play Store
1:25
coming to Chrome OS and somehow I have
1:27
no idea how they've done this but the
1:29
way that they have made this happen is
1:32
um over the last 6 months a year or so
1:34
they've been changing the under
1:35
underpinnings of Chrome OS to be able to
1:38
handle all the apps and the run times
1:40
and everything needed to run Android
1:43
apps and so what that means for you and
1:45
for me uh as as Chrome users or
1:48
potential Chrome users if if some of you
1:50
were watching this and you haven't quite
1:52
bought a Chromebook yet but you heard
1:53
some of the buzz what that means then is
1:56
when you take your Chromebook eventually
1:59
uh we'll talk about availability here in
2:01
a minute you'll be able to just go to
2:02
the Play Store and it it sees your
2:04
Chromebook exactly like it would see an
2:07
Android phone or an Android tablet pick
2:09
the app you want download it and run it
2:13
um and that's exciting because we're not
2:15
talking about a handful of apps and
2:16
we're not talking about um the ones that
2:19
developers choose to Port over there's
2:21
no porting process and we're going to
2:22
kind of talk through that now I've got a
2:24
couple points that I want to get to and
2:26
we'll we'll handle hopefully all of this
2:28
in those points so first full Play Store
2:31
we're not talking about a version
2:32
here we're not talking about a handful
2:34
of apps we're not talking about
2:35
partially developed apps we're talking
2:36
about the entire play store so just as
2:38
if you went out and bought a new I don't
2:40
know Android tablets are pretty much
2:42
dead but I'm trying to think of one uh
2:44
pixel C so you went and bought a pixel C
2:46
and you said all right I want to get uh
2:48
some Angry Birds I want Facebook I want
2:51
Twitter same exact thing you'll open the
2:54
Play Store up you'll choose the app you
2:55
want you'll hit download it will install
2:57
itself and it will open um um it's it's
3:01
amazing what Google has done here
3:02
because instead of saying hey developers
3:04
we have um uh Chrome OS over here that
3:08
by the way just this last week posted
3:10
more uh more sales than MacBooks in the
3:13
first quarter so technically speaking
3:15
where uh Chrome OS is the number two
3:17
operating system um we'll see how some
3:20
of those numbers play out
3:22
but that Google didn't go to those
3:24
developers and say hey uh we got a
3:26
pretty popular platform if you'll do a
3:28
steps a and
3:30
C little bit X Y and Z then your app
3:33
will work on Chromebooks instead Google
3:36
just kind of moved all that stuff out of
3:37
the way and said here let's open the
3:38
door wide open let's make this so when a
3:41
developer sits down and creates an app
3:43
for Android it just works on Chrome OS
3:46
and I'm not kidding if you look around
3:47
on the internet there's a few videos uh
3:49
The Verge is probably the best one I've
3:51
seen like just watching the thing in
3:53
motion uh deer bone spends a little bit
3:55
of time with a Chromebook Pixel 2 and
3:58
and Android apps on that Chromebook
4:01
Pixel and it's really really exciting
4:03
because they just work U any app you
4:05
want they just work there's a caveat
4:08
like if it had if it needs GPS for
4:09
instance and obviously your Chromebook
4:11
probably doesn't have GPS I don't think
4:13
any of them do um then the Play Store
4:16
will know that and go hey this isn't
4:17
compatible with your device and that's
4:19
if GPS is a required function for it to
4:21
run and so U that's up to the developer
4:23
to put that on there most of them have
4:26
um so that if you had a tablet that
4:27
didn't have it it was going to break
4:28
functionality it wouldn't work it
4:30
wouldn't install but the full Play Store
4:33
is available so whatever app you want
4:35
Microsoft Word got it you want any of
4:38
the Microsoft Office Suites you want uh
4:40
Facebook Twitter uh you want Snapchat uh
4:44
any of these apps that work on your
4:46
phones or your tablets will work
4:48
natively and that's the second Point
4:50
apps were in natively they're not in an
4:52
emulator so you've heard about Arc
4:56
you've heard about arc welder and and
4:57
emulated apps and things running in the
4:59
silo this is not that this is isn't that
5:01
at all actually this is uh apps running
5:04
completely native and so when we say
5:06
that we're talking about Native hardware
5:08
and everything so and software
5:10
components um when you get a
5:12
notification right now Chrome OS down in
5:14
that bottom tray um a thing pops up and
5:16
you get a notification well wouldn't it
5:18
make sense then if your Android app sent
5:20
you a notification it went there instead
5:22
of appearing oddly in like a window or
5:24
something it's exactly what it does uh
5:27
it would make sense for these apps to be
5:28
able to use BL Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and
5:31
and the radios in your Chromebook and
5:32
guess what they can just like you
5:34
normally would see them um it it's
5:36
pretty mindboggling it just works things
5:39
just work the Play Store recognizes your
5:41
device as another Android device
5:43
basically and you download the stuff and
5:45
they just work the way they're supposed
5:46
to that being said um at this point
5:50
right now there's a couple ways that the
5:52
the windows resize you get the pter you
5:54
get landscape you get full screen um as
5:57
Android n rolls out and and app
5:59
Developers make their apps to where
6:00
they're multiple size for you know the
6:02
side by-side viewing that Android n is
6:04
bringing then we'll talk about you know
6:06
resizable windows and all that kind of
6:07
stuff so the future looks crazy bright
6:10
uh for this and so and because of that
6:13
like GPU and CPU all those resources are
6:15
at the app's disposal so you want to put
6:18
3D games on your Chromebook go for it
6:20
they will run and you'll find in the
6:22
video and I'll link it in the
6:23
description below you'll find in that
6:25
video 3D games work just fine because
6:28
guess what the hardware on a Chromebook
6:30
pretty much any Chromebook is faster and
6:33
better than the hardware that's in most
6:34
phones um so I mean take the Nexus 6p
6:37
it's got the Snapdragon 810 in it uh
6:40
great processor and all but if you put
6:42
that up against any cellon processor
6:44
those processors whoop them pretty bad
6:46
especially the core I ones uh when you
6:48
move up to something like pixel or the
6:50
Dell Chromebook or Toshiba that have
6:52
core i3s i5s i7s I mean it's not even
6:55
close as far as GPU and CPU uh Power
6:58
compared to what's in in the best phones
7:01
that are available right now so really
7:03
Android app shouldn't have any issue
7:05
whatsoever we're running on pretty much
7:06
any Chromebook so that's very very
7:08
excited um having windowed apps having
7:11
apps that you can open up in a window
7:13
and and you can minimize and you know
7:16
put things wherever you need to it's
7:18
going to close the productivity Gap um
7:20
that chromos has right now so a lot of
7:22
people say I like it it it's nice and
7:24
clean but there's X Y and Z I can't get
7:26
done for my job or or for whatever it is
7:28
I need to do
7:30
this is going to close that Gap um
7:32
because as as people get the apps they
7:35
need natively to run on their Chromebook
7:38
they they will look at it and go hey for
7:40
400 bucks this thing's a steal I can do
7:42
everything I need to do on this device
7:44
Plus have a full desktop browser
7:45
experience as well it's the best of both
7:48
worlds um and so uh when we start
7:52
talking about you know productivity apps
7:53
we're talking about you know photo
7:54
editing we're talking about video
7:55
editing we're talking about audio
7:57
editing these things that right now on
7:58
Chromebook are just kind of painful if
8:00
you even attempt to do them if you can
8:02
find something to try with those things
8:04
go away and now while the the app
8:06
selection isn't the best in Android
8:09
guess what now we have a platform that
8:12
makes Android developers go oh I can
8:15
write really awesome productivity apps
8:17
for a big screen Android tablets have
8:19
been long since dead um for the most
8:21
part they've just really struggled ever
8:23
to take hold and so when you have a
8:25
product category that struggles
8:27
developers look at it and go I don't
8:29
want to invest my time in that Android
8:31
on the phone great sales like crazy so
8:33
yeah I'll develop stuff for a phone I'm
8:35
not bothering with it for the tablet
8:37
though this will change that it's not
8:39
going to be it might change that this
8:41
will change uh how developers see and
8:44
view Android apps in general as
8:46
productivity tools and so as that
8:48
happens now more consumers also start uh
8:51
because in schools and in in workplaces
8:53
and Enterprise they're going to start
8:54
seeing more Chromebooks deployed uh and
8:57
by the way it's just as secure as it all
8:59
always was because the the secure parts
9:02
of of Android and each of these apps do
9:04
run in their own individual kind of
9:06
capsule that keeps it secure from
9:08
everything else and so there are sandbox
9:10
that way uh so any of you have security
9:12
concerns with this chromos as secure As
9:14
It Ever Was and you can choose if you
9:16
want to to opt out of this and not even
9:18
put these on your device but as people
9:20
in work environments and in school
9:21
environments start adopting Chromebooks
9:24
and guess what more consumers start
9:25
getting is they bring them home their
9:26
family sees them they think it's great
9:28
this works it's simple my kids can run
9:30
all their games and apps and stuff on
9:32
them so consumer adoption starts growing
9:35
pretty rapidly I think in the next few
9:36
months as this happens and guess what
9:39
more adoption means more devices it
9:41
means two in ones it means convertibles
9:43
it means all sorts of things I imagine
9:45
right now A a pixel C Tablet running
9:48
Chrome
9:49
OS imagine the 10 or 11inch tablet that
9:53
can detach and you can run any Android
9:55
you app you want including an app
9:58
launcher so you could put Google Now
10:00
launcher on run it in full screen and
10:02
have a full experience just like you're
10:05
on an Android tablet the minute you're
10:07
done close that launcher down drop it
10:09
into a keyboard you're fully productive
10:11
as well because you still have Chrome OS
10:13
there and I for one work from chrome
10:15
every single day and there's certain
10:17
things I've had to get around but guess
10:19
what those limitations are getting ready
10:20
to go away so this is amazing this is
10:24
this is great news um it's going to
10:27
change fundamentally um how well
10:29
Chromebooks sell how productive they are
10:32
how awesome they are in general and so
10:33
I'm obviously quite excited about the
10:37
future of chromeos and so you may be
10:39
asking if you haven't read anywhere like
10:41
when when is this coming right now
10:42
there's three Chromebooks that are going
10:43
to get it within the next couple weeks I
10:45
think they're saying before around mid
10:47
June the Chromebook Pixel 2 um so the
10:51
2015 Edition the Acer R11 which is their
10:55
convertible kind of fold flat touchcreen
10:57
and the Asus Chromebook flip and so
10:59
those three for obvious reasons and
11:00
actually you have kind of a nice decent
11:03
uh variety of performance there you've
11:05
got the Chromebook Pixel which is a
11:06
beast uh the R11 is a little faster than
11:09
the flip and the flip which is probably
11:11
one of the weakest Chromebooks available
11:13
as far as processor speed but it's an
11:15
awesome little device and so it's going
11:17
to be really interesting to see how um
11:19
all the Android apps behave on the two
11:22
and so I will have at my dispose I'm
11:23
going to have my uh 2015 Chromebook
11:26
Pixel LS so the top of the spectrum here
11:29
and then at the bottom of the spectrum
11:30
for performance- wise I also have the
11:33
Asus Chromebook flip and I actually have
11:34
the two gig version I got a deal on it
11:36
and figured I would have it and I'm
11:38
going to put it in developer mode
11:39
because developer mode are the ones that
11:41
are going to get uh the people other
11:42
than the dev Channel with Chrome OS are
11:44
the ones that are going to get this
11:45
first so you'll see it around uh early
11:48
to mid June um and I think what they're
11:50
saying is August uh it's going to hit
11:52
the beta Channel and then uh full roll
11:55
out by September is what they're saying
11:57
so far so who knows it could roll up
12:00
quicker it could take a little bit
12:01
longer but we're probably going to see a
12:03
round fall probably surrounding the
12:06
Android n release as well because again
12:08
multi- windows and all that kind of
12:10
stuff plays really nice into all this
12:12
thing um hopefully in the fall we're
12:15
likely going to see a full roll out a
12:17
full like hey this is this is here go
12:20
get your apps go get your Chromebook
12:22
have fun with it it's going to be
12:23
awesome and so I'm excited I hope you is
12:26
either a potential or a current Chrome
12:28
OS user I hope you're excited about this
12:31
uh because it's an exciting thing we're
12:32
in an exciting period for Chrome OS as
12:36
shipments have grown we're you know the
12:37
number two OS now apparently um it's
12:40
it's exciting to see where this could go
12:42
and where I think this is really going
12:44
to go and so um if you haven't already
12:46
subscribe to the channel uh give a
12:48
thumbs up if you like this video check
12:50
out the website um all that kind of
12:52
stuff I'm going to try to deliver up as
12:54
much news about this because I think
12:55
it's one of the biggest things that have
12:57
happened uh since I started this YouTube
12:59
channel um and so uh keep it locked here
13:03
I I I will try to make many videos about
13:05
as the apps start coming how they work
13:07
what works what doesn't what's weird
13:09
what's buggy all that kind of stuff so
13:10
you can be ready if you're if you're
13:12
considering buying or thinking about
13:13
buying uh a Chromebook come uh this fall
13:17
one last note there is a list and I will
13:19
post the link down below for that as
13:20
well there's a list uh that Google has
13:22
posted that tells you exactly what
13:24
Chromebooks are going to be available
13:26
with this and that pretty much it's
13:27
anything that's come out in the last
13:28
year and a half 2 years years so there
13:30
are some notable Exceptions there uh the
13:32
original Chromebook Pixel would run all
13:35
this stuff just fine um and so it's kind
13:36
of sad right now that's left off who
13:39
knows that could change I think these
13:40
are the ones are saying for sure we're
13:41
going to have it on these it's a decent
13:43
size list um but you can check and see
13:45
if the current Chromebook you have is on
13:47
there and if it's not decide whether or
13:49
not it's time to kind of upgrade um
13:51
that's one of the best parts of
13:52
Chromebooks right they're not that
13:53
expensive and so um again hopefully uh
13:57
you're all excited about this thanks for
13:58
watching watching again thumbs up like
14:01
subscribe below and we'll see you in the
14:03
next one thanks
