hey folks it's robbie payne again i'm
0:02
here with an unboxing of the much
0:04
anticipated nexus 5.
0:07
just came in the mail today i know
0:09
there's a handful of people that have
0:10
gotten a hold of theirs
0:12
earlier
0:13
packing your seat
0:15
already got my name and stuff blacked
0:17
out there
0:18
so i did open it to this point at least
0:22
and here we have it
0:37
and packaged much like the nexus 7.
0:43
uh just a quick note too uh there's an
0:45
imei on the side
0:47
um i got mine with the uh
0:50
with activating it with uh with sprint
0:53
in mind and so it has does have the cvma
0:56
bands on there everything looks good
0:59
i have read a little bit online about
1:01
activating this guy on sprint right now
1:04
i'm being a little bit of a headache as
1:05
far as the sim cards go i have uh the
1:08
iphone 5c currently
1:10
so i'm hoping that uh
1:12
pulling the micro sim or nano sim or
1:14
whatever size sim it is out of the
1:17
iphone
1:18
and getting it into a proper tray and
1:19
getting it in the nexus 5
1:21
will enable me to to get that taken care
1:24
of but
1:25
for those of you wanting to activate
1:26
this one from google play on sprint
1:28
from what i've heard if you don't have a
1:30
phone that has a removable sim in it
1:31
right now you've got to get on with
1:33
customer support over to a sprint store
1:35
probably preferably a corporate store
1:38
and request a sim and they're supposedly
1:41
not charging for that i don't know if
1:43
that's completely accurate or not
1:45
so
1:46
we've got the
1:48
nexus 5 we're going to sit into the side
1:50
for just a second
1:52
get the tray
1:54
uh
1:57
feels like there's something in there i
1:58
don't know maybe not
2:05
no it's just padded
2:09
under the flap here
2:11
we've got some
2:12
manuals
2:14
uh sim tool which is nice uh it's better
2:17
than using a
2:20
paper clip or any other thing it's nice
2:21
to actually have one
2:24
um just um basically here where the
2:26
buttons where the nfc is located uh
2:28
warranty and guide here
2:32
obviously this is a 350 handset so not
2:35
expecting any goodies in the box here
2:37
and
2:38
not to disappoint we have a basic lg
2:41
power block
2:43
and
2:47
usb cable just out of curiosity a lot of
2:50
times on cheaper devices
2:53
i tend to find that
2:55
usb cables are short
2:57
it's been the case with the last couple
2:59
of nexus 7s
3:01
just insanely short cables
3:04
um i don't i don't feel like it needs to
3:06
be 10 foot long or anything but
3:08
that's actually it's got some nice some
3:10
nice width to it there's so much length
3:11
to it probably uh four foot i think so
3:14
that's nice um because it's really
3:16
annoying uh when you have to reach just
3:18
to get the thing on your bedside table
3:21
that's a bit annoying those of you who
3:23
own a nexus 7 will know exactly what i'm
3:25
talking about
3:26
so remove all that stuff out of the way
3:29
and bring this guy into center frame and
3:32
i'm not going to do too much on it
3:33
because i know i've got to go through
3:34
some processes i'm not really familiar
3:36
with on sprint as far as activating this
3:39
thing and so hopefully we got some power
3:40
we're going to we're going to power him
3:42
up here in just a second but i'll say
3:45
wow really light
3:47
and just yeah really really light
3:50
device feels good in the hand
3:54
and the screen
3:55
looks like it's going to be a really
3:56
just a really good size i like the
3:58
galaxy s4 that five inch screen size uh
4:01
seemed to be kind of a perfect mix of
4:03
portability and usability so uh browsing
4:06
on it was really nice while at the same
4:08
time uh fitting in your pocket easily
4:11
we'll go ahead and peel the
4:13
front piece off here if i can get a hold
4:15
of it
4:21
and
4:24
this thing's been leaked a million times
4:25
so most of you have seen it know what's
4:27
going on but we got the earpiece
4:29
front-facing camera and some sensors in
4:31
there
4:32
uh ceramic buttons uh if you've read
4:35
about those um
4:38
it's hard to really tell that they feel
4:39
any different
4:40
but you know sturdy good and clicky nice
4:42
and raised easy to find
4:44
your power button over here same same
4:46
ceramic
4:47
sim card slot and uh
4:50
microphone headphone jack on the top and
4:53
you've got your micro usb and with two
4:55
speakers and from what i've read online
4:57
uh one of these is actually just the mic
4:59
uh they did this just to kind of give it
5:01
some symmetry but it's basically one's a
5:03
mic one's a speaker so it's it's a mono
5:05
speaker
5:06
but really
5:07
we're kidding ourselves if we think
5:09
stereo speakers on a handset really make
5:10
that much difference
5:12
um around the back looks like we've got
5:14
something over the camera here
5:17
yeah itty bitty plastic piece
5:19
um and then some
5:21
activation information so it'll be
5:23
interesting
5:24
um that's just the imei
5:26
i'm assuming i guess once you get
5:28
powered on you can find that stuff on
5:29
the settings
5:30
um but you know activating this phone
5:32
once you take that off there and if for
5:35
some reason you can't get the phone to
5:36
turn on you would definitely need your
5:37
box or something like that the camera
5:39
lens is is protruding a little bit um
5:43
and for me i keep i keep phones in the
5:46
case uh pretty much extensively
5:48
uh because i like to resell them and so
5:50
i don't like to get them scratched at
5:51
all
5:53
i don't like the way cases feel but i do
5:55
and i do enjoy being able to sell a mint
5:57
condition phone so
5:59
that won't be a big bother to me but for
6:00
those of you who don't keep a case on i
6:03
don't know if you can really see that
6:04
and in the renders you can kind of see
6:06
it
6:07
get up close if the phone will focus for
6:09
me
6:10
i don't think it's going to
6:12
but yeah it's slightly raised just ever
6:14
so slightly and i don't think
6:16
yeah the curve of the phone isn't going
6:17
to take care of that so it is going to
6:19
probably you probably get some scratches
6:20
along the bottom side there more than
6:22
likely
6:24
if you don't have a case on it and you
6:25
set it on its back frequently so let's
6:28
attempt to power up here and see see
6:30
what happens
6:33
and we do have some juice which is nice
6:35
now one thing i wanted to check with
6:36
this the the
6:38
nexus 4 that i did own
6:40
while it had a beautiful screen front on
6:43
you could tilt to the top into the
6:45
bottom and it was fine and to the left
6:47
and to the right and it was always fine
6:49
but for some reason it really washed out
6:53
on the diagonal kind of on the 45 and so
6:56
i'm trying to see it's hard to tell in
6:58
this image if that's the case
7:00
it seems there's a little bit of that
7:02
going on
7:03
um
7:04
yeah a little bit of polarization
7:07
probably impossible to see on the camera
7:09
but when you hold the phone uh left and
7:11
right again doesn't really seem to do
7:13
anything up and down doesn't seem to do
7:15
anything but on that 45
7:18
the black turns really light
7:21
and that's just kind of an unfortunate
7:22
thing i think that's a
7:24
that could possibly be an lg screen
7:26
thing because i want to say i saw that
7:28
on the optimus g as well
7:30
and while it's uh
7:32
it's it's a little unfortunate the truth
7:34
is it's really not that big of a deal
7:37
it didn't really bother me that much of
7:38
the nexus
7:40
and it's not as bad when it's not just
7:41
straight black on the screen
7:44
but you know viewing angles
7:47
aren't as quite amazing as
7:51
say an amoled screen
7:53
like i said straight from the left and
7:54
right it's fine straight up and down is
7:56
fine but you get it on that 45 degree
7:59
angle and tilt it back and you really
8:01
notice some polarization
8:02
which is really strange i'm not really
8:04
sure why that is
8:06
um
8:08
so yeah this is probably where i'm going
8:09
to have to halt
8:11
and take a break
8:14
okay guys um i'm back after a quick
8:17
setup well not quite so quick
8:19
um turns out the
8:21
nano sim that was in the iphone
8:23
5c was not compatible uh so i was on a
8:26
chat for about 30 minutes with sprint
8:29
and attempted to get it activated uh
8:31
didn't have any problem with the imei
8:33
any id stuff but the the nano sim was
8:35
had giving it issue
8:37
so called up the local best buy they
8:39
have them were able to sell a sim card
8:41
to me
8:43
and actually they went ahead and
8:44
activated it while i was there so
8:46
you can see now
8:48
down here we've got sprint service i was
8:50
able to download some stuff on lte so
8:53
it's all up and running good to go
8:54
i did want to throw that on there at the
8:56
end
8:56
for those of you who are sprint users
8:58
and are buying this wanting to activate
9:00
it you're either going to have to get a
9:01
sprint card from our sim card from
9:03
sprint directly
9:05
but best buy has them
9:07
they she had a whole stack of them i
9:08
mean they're supposed to go with
9:10
um sim devices with sprint
9:13
but they were able they were actually
9:15
able to sell them and ring them up and
9:16
sell it to me and so
9:18
hopefully that will be a tip for you
9:21
if you're trying to get this on sprint
9:23
and one other thing i did notice
9:26
that i'm a little
9:28
upset about so far with it just in the
9:31
drive over to best buying back i had
9:35
uh a downloaded from spotify and the
9:38
comparison audio as far as from the
9:40
output from the headphone jack
9:42
uh is
9:43
probably half the volume of what's
9:45
coming out of an iphone and iphones are
9:47
cranked up a little bit they're a little
9:49
bit louder than pretty much any other
9:50
device i've had but
9:51
uh this is probably down on that nexus 4
9:53
level of having a really low
9:56
uh headphone audio output so
9:59
hopefully that's something google
10:00
addresses very soon
10:02
i know once uh once some custom roms and
10:05
custom kernels come out that those are
10:07
easy adjusts for those who are uh tech
10:09
savvy but uh for those who aren't that's
10:11
kind of a shame um because it is really
10:14
really uh easily discernible that it's
10:16
it's uh very low volume coming out of
10:18
the headset so hopefully that is
10:20
something google addresses soon but
10:22
other than that
10:23
everything else thus far just in the
10:25
couple hours i've had my hands on it uh
10:27
the device feels great it really does
10:29
the low-light camera performance seems
10:31
really good and i will go over some more
10:33
of those things in the full review later
10:35
until then thanks
