If you own a coffee shop, gift store, or some other small business that exchanges money on a daily basis, it turns out a Chromebook with a touch screen could be your next option as a point of sale.
In general, what you see in most of these setups is either an iPad on a custom stand or Square’s own register solution. More and more, businesses are being run via Square with iPads, iPhones or Android phones.
Whether small restaurants or food trucks, Square has made cash register systems easy, simple and affordable for small business.
Can A Chromebook Keep Up?
Out of sheer curiosity, a friend of mine asked if I thought it would be possible to use Square Register on the Samsung Chromebook Plus. His wife runs a small furniture restoration store and he thought it could be handy for her to use there.
I of course quickly found my Square Reader, downloaded the app, and signed in.
And, you know what? It worked!
And not in a janky, some-parts-work-other-parts-don’t kind of way. It worked in a smooth, silky, plug-and-play kind of way.
Within just a couple minutes, I was up and running and paid myself a few bucks in a quick transaction.
The card reader just worked. The app just worked. The whole thing just worked.
As we venture forward into a future with Chrome OS tablets and detachables, this sort of function is the sort of thing Chrome OS needs to be able to leverage well with Android Apps.
It is encouraging, to say the least, that real-world applications of Android are already proving very, very useful in the actual marketplace. We’ve said it before and it bears repeating: Android apps on Chromebooks are going to be disruptive, and in the best way.
