We came, we saw, we were handsomely rewarded with what could possibly be the biggest news of CES 2017 as far as Chrome Unboxed is concerned.
At Samsung’s press event this afternoon, the massive electronics manufacturer revealed everything from next-generation appliances, the future of Smart TV’s, premium home sound and how they are going to connect them all.
For us however, the best news was saved for the very last. VP of product marketing, Alanna Cotton spoke excitedly as she reminisced of the 2011 collaboration of Google and her employer to create the first Samsung Chromebook.
As Alanna spoke on the future of computing and what the new breed of device would look like we were greeted by the Samsung Chromebook Pro and its sister device the Chromebook Plus. While we can’t say we were surprised to see two devices, we are still in awe that a company as large as Samsung would include these Chromebooks in their highly-produced press conference.
We will talk more later about the implications of that and what it could mean for the future of the Chrome OS consumer market.
But now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. Here are the specs of each device.
Specs
As you can see, the Chromebooks are virtually identical apart from the processor. The Chromebook we know as ‘Kevin’ was long believed to be the Pro model sporting the RK3399 hexa-core ARM processor. Now it appears the Chromebook Pro is, in fact, the big-sister equipped with the Intel Skylake Core M3. This device is most assuredly ‘Caroline‘ that we have been tracking for the past couple months.
At the end of the day, what’s in a name. We have been tracking these devices since long before the untimely leak of the Samsung and I say this with the utmost humility, it was thrilling to be there in person when they made their big debut.
The lesser model is up for pre-sale at Samsung as well as via Amazon. The Samsung Chromebook Plus is scheduled to ship Feb. 12 according to the retail site. It is priced at $449 which is $50 less than we originally saw back in October. The Core M3 model has yet to get a price and is rumored to be ready for sale some time in March.
