CES 2017 is winding down. But, with only 2 days left, we have hardly scratched the surface of what this year will bring for Chrome OS. Now that the Samsung Chromebook Plus & Pro and the ASUS Chromebook Flip C302 are official and out in the wild, what’s next for Chromebooks?
Rest assured, while we have been looking to the future here in Las Vegas, development of Chrome OS devices is still going strong. We’ve been tracking what appears to be a refresh of the OG ASUS Flip and would expect to see it make its debut in the coming months. How ASUS will approach branding a line of devices is beyond me but it seems the Flip nomenclature is quickly becoming its own ecosystem.
Now it appears another RockChip device may be in the works. Keeping with the Minions theme, this new RK3399-based device just appeared in the repositories this week. Code named ‘Scarlet’, we really don’t have much else to go on other than it shares the same baseboard as the recently announced Samsung Chromebook Plus.
We are very, very confident we will begin to see the full roll out of the Play Store towards the end of this month when Chrome OS 56 makes its way to the stable channel. While we do not know if ‘Scarlet’ is going to follow the wildly rampant convertible form-factor, chanced are we are looking at another mid-ranged 2-in-1 device.
You can see the addition of ‘Scarlet’ to the repository in the link below.
As the cost of the newest RockChip drops we will surely see more and more of these devices targeting consumers who want a tablet experience that leverages Android apps and doesn’t break the bank.
We will be keeping a close eye on this and all the other new devices on the horizon. Make sure to check back often to see what’s new.
