Poin2 may not ring a lot of bells when you think of Chromebook manufacturers but don’t be fooled, they’ve been in the Chrome OS game going on two years now. Poin2 (shortened version of Point Tu Lab) is the only Chromebook manufacturer licensed by Google to produce devices in Korea and have been providing IT services to South Korea since 2014.
Poin2’s first device was an 11.6″ clamshell equipped with the same RockChip RK3288 found in the OG ASUS Flip. A recent refresh now offers the Poin2 Chromebook 11 with 4GB of RAM and you can find it at a number of retailers including WalMart, NewEgg and Amazon for under $200.
Now Poin2 is releasing two, new MediaTek-based Chromebooks slated for release this summer. The details on the new devices are still limited but what we do know is that they will be offering an 11.6″ convertible and a 14″ Full-HD clamshell both equipped with the same MT8173C as the Acer Chromebook R13. Images above show the Chromebooks with the Google Play store landing page up front and center. Google has said that going forward all Chrome OS devices will have Android Apps out of the box and the Poin2 devices should be no exception.
The original Poin2 Chromebook 11 is also on the list to receive the Play Store in the coming months and makes a good budget Chromebook for those looking for a disposable device. I have reached out to Poin2 for more details and possible the opportunity to review their new devices and look forward to hearing back.
