According to the G Suite Updates blog, users on Mac or PC will be seeing a new app available from Google to handle a more cohesive backup solution.
From the post, which is a bit scant on detail, we can at least tell that this app looks to replace the Google Drive app users have become accustom to.
The difference with this app is in the access it will have to back up many parts of the Mac or PC user’s experience. Formerly, with the Google Drive app on a PC, things worked similarly to Dropbox. You install the app and get a new, synced folder in your file manager.
When I was a PC guy, I basically operated 100% out of this folder and created all my needed files inside Google Drive. In this way, when I got a new PC, at least I could just install Google Drive and all my basic files were there.
Google Backup and Sync looks to expand that operation a bit more naturally. Instead of creating a whole sub-system of folders in my Google Drive folder, it seems Backup and Sync will be able to simply back up those local folders for the user.
I’ll be honest, thinking through those details feels a bit last-gen as Chromebooks sync everything all the time. I don’t remember the last time I even worried about backing up anything.
As a matter of fact, that is one of my favorite parts of being a Chrome OS user.
For those of you that can’t make that leap or simply don’t want to, this new solution from Google may make switching devices a bit simpler when it rolls out next week.
